Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Suggestions please

Ok so it's got to that time of year when I've got to organise the hoards and book the skiing holiday.

I'm a bit stumped about where to look now so am after suggestions. Previous years we have been to La Plange, Mottaret (plus skied the other areas of course), Val d'Isere and Val Thorens.

We are looking for something similar size (although not those places again).

Must be highish as we go last week in Jan so need the altitude to be guaranteed snow.
Probably France, lots of runs, ski in ski out, decent ish night life, reasonable trasnfer times....

....you get the picture...

Any suggestions?

edde,

When you went to La Plagne, was that pre or post link up with Les Arcs? If it was pre then you won't have skied all the Les Arcs side - pretty big ski area, choice of resorts to stay in, depending on what you're looking for.

Does it have to be France? If not, then what about somewhere like, Verbier, Zermatt or St Anton?

edde, you should be ok for most places in the last week in Jan unless we get a very bad winter so you might want to widen the search area

By the way the down a cravasse under your name means that the email address you previously used is apparently no longer valid

edde,
Not much to go on ...but take a look at Alpe D'huez if it must be France.
It appears you are after mileage so PDS in late jan should be good as well...
Ski in, ski out rules out a lot of places as does decent nightlife in France...!!

edde, "need the altitude to be guaranteed snow", altitude no guarantee of anything I am afraid (IMHO).

Verbier a good idea, PDS likely to appeal although you will need to get over the height=snow thing Happy Chamonix/massif?

edde, you don't want much do you? Same as me really! Altitude, ski-in ski-out, miles, some night-life ok but most such places don't really come with reasonable transfer times (not bad for some if flying to Chambery). I take it you don't really want to go to Courchevel, Les Menuires or Tignes? How about Avoriaz or Flaine? They're short transfer. Or Les Arcs as mentioned above? The big problem with lots of snow-safe places other than these or where you've been already is the relative lack of ski-in ski-out near the resort centre as opposed to a bus ride away from the town centre several hundred metres horizontal and a couple of hundred metres vertical away! wink

Good on you JT for recommending Alpe d'Huez - not enough people know about this resort! www.alpedhuez.com should give you some good info. Personally I think its a great resort with a vast ski area, both pisted on off-piste, there is a huge choice of non-sking activities and of course a comprehensive apre-ski scene. I would say all this as its home but give it a try! If you're a DIY er then there are lots of good deals going in January. Drop me a line if you want any further info about the resort. Little Angel

sarah@alpedhuez,

Yes, we had a great time in new snow a couple of seasons back, from the top it is almost one great big bowl.
Wasn't keen on the drive in one hit but a flight to Grenoble would be perfect. If/when we have look at La Grave we will have to pop in
to ADH again. Personally, the fact that not many people know about it is a good thing. But a good ski resort for all types of skiers, IMO and better than LP for example..!!

sarah@alpedhuez,

Do you know of any interesting routes in the area? We weren't there long enough to get beyond the intineraires on the lift map but as the snow was so good we didn't need to...

laundryman,

I was going to say the drive up is fascinating and I am sure there are more than 21 hairpins..!!

slikedges,

If you research hard you could get ski-in and ski-out but I never bother, a little walk is a good warm down IMO. Certainly I wouldn't dismiss it on those grounds. I thought it was better than LP, and better than say Meribel or VT but not the 3V combined.

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

JT, when you have 3 small children's skis to carry you don't bother to research hard, you just exclude such resorts until they can carry their own (and yours too)! snowHead

slikedges,

That's fair enough, differnt criteria, but you can find the type of accomodation you require there.
Nit quite in the Mottaret or Belleplagne bracket though, I think...

JT, are you talking about off-piste routes? if so, the Vamos guide to ADH, L2A and La Grave is a good start. A lot of what is on offer starts from the top of Pic Blanc and is glaciated so you need to be a bit careful if you're not used to that sort of thing. It's amazing ducking under the rope and skiing down into the Grand Sablat and having it to yourself. If that run was in Chamonix or Val d'Isere it would be tracked out in minutes!

The other really good area is the stuff above Mont Frais accessed from the Dome des Rousses or done as a continuation from, say, the Pyramide (accessed from Pic Blanc). This isn't glaciated but it is quite complex terrain so you do need to scope out you line a bit. Fantastic area though.

I can recommend a couple of guides from that area. If you're interested, PM me.

Here are a couple of snaps to whet your appetite:
