Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Lake Tahoe

Can anyone advise as to whether Easter (2019) is a good time to ski Lake Tahoe? Also I've heard mixed reports about the running of the resorts; poor attitude of lift staff etc. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Who knows - tell me what the snowpack will be by then? Resorts run just fine, South American staff at many resorts can be a little lackdaisical and just not on it as much but it's not bad attitude they're just kids. Generally I'd say Easter would be warm sunny long days, lots of great corn, occasional chance of big Sierra dumpage.

Main problem in a bad season like they are having this year is that staff get laid off and leave so in addition to poor snow pack you maybe don't have all the staff for full ops plus Californiites from the Bay probably switch off skiing so there aren't the visitor numbers to motivate resorst.

I know the original question sounded daft as no one knows what the ski conditions will be like; I was just looking for a general rule of thumb... We skied Breckenridge Easter 2015 and got away with it... Extremely cold nights followed by glorious sunny days (crunchy in the mornings and Slushy in the afternoons) interspersed with nearly a foot of fresh powder during one day's snowfall! Our intention is to do 4 days in San Francisco and 10 days skiing and Lake Tahoe looked the nearest ski resort.

Lake Tahoe isn’t a ski resort itself - there’s a number of resorts around the lake e.g. Northstar, squaw, heavenly. Like the alps, the Californian Sierra Nevada has very variable weather from season to season, and in the last 5 years has had both the snowiest and driest years on record. Northstar has phenomenal snow making, squaw is higher, and I don’t know about heavenly. In general you should be ok in April, but I’m not sure it’s any more reliable than a high French resort.

The only one I’ve skied is Northstar and I thought the lifties were very polite and helpful. Resort staff were also nice. However, I’m also a believer in expectation bias in these situations.

From San Fran I think you can also fly to mammoth making it just as near as the Tahoe area.

I've skied Heavenly Lake Tahoe a number of times, on the back of business trips to San Francisco. In each case we drove out of the Bay Area around 10am and the roads were clear enough to approach from the south (if the snow is very heavy then you have to drive to Reno and approach from the north, but we never had to resort to this). It's great to have a morning start - people flying in from the UK don't land until 3pm or later and I'd not want to do the journey at night.

You can fly to Reno from San José and I think, SFR but by the time you've faffed-around getting to the airport etc. I think you might as well drive.

Heavenly (www.skiheavenly.com) sits astride the state border, so one side is relatively alcohol-dry while the other is wet and gambling. You normally have to choose which of the four base stations you want to be near to (it's a bit like the 3 Valleys in this respect). We always stayed at the California Lodge base, at the Tahoe Seasons Resort Hotel, so we could just walk to/from the chairlift, so people could be independent and start/finish as they wished. However, we then had to hire a taxi to get into town. This was before the Heavenly Village lift was built (which is right in the centre of the town). You'll see a link to 'Choose your Base Station' on the Heavenly website.

Town centre accommodation often offers relatively cheap rooms in the hope of enticing you into the casinos (a but like staying in Las Vegas) - that's on the Nevada side. California lakeside accommodation often sounds exotic, but it's actually pretty quiet and out of the way on the California side.

Skiing was great whenever we went but as with anywhere, nothing is guaranteed. We had the luxury of already being in SFR for 8-10 days on business, and were able to look at the conditions and book at the last minute. But they do have some very lean years.

I'd always recommend getting over jetlag and acclimatising if you can with an initial stay in the Bay Area to 'do' San Francisco, as you're intending.

That's not quite right - CA doesn't have gambling but plenty of bars, liquor stores, full serve supermarkets, beers at gas stations etc. While Stateline area is convenient for walk to accomodation queues at the Gondy can be a bitch so if you have a car anyway driving to Cali or Stagecoach bases can be a good call
