Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Best Austrian resorts?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hello all

Even though its the height of summer, I'm already thinking about next winters skiing hols. Me and my wife fancy Austria again (been to Kitzbuhel - which we loved - and Schladming before), but wondered what other resorts SnowHeads recommend. Guess we'll go end of January, and try and pick up a late deal to keep the cost down as much as possible (we like to invest any spare cash on apres ski!). We do like the more traditional resorts too with plenty of varied runs to choose from (we've been skiing 6 or 7 times).

Any advice gratefully received

Cheers! Cool Laughing

Solden is best ski area ive skiied in austria. Having said that it was day visit, night life is supposed to be rowdy as. Having said that i havent seen any uk firms offering trips there.

Gargellen and the montafon areas are good too. If you get the weather soll/ellmau is a good place

I'd go for Saalbach-Hinterglemm-Leogang (Saalbach has by far the biggest nightlife) and (yes) Solden or Ischgl ... and then work up to St Anton, which is the best of the lot when you really want to enjoy the off-piste. St Anton is the all-time finest resort for ski spirit and buzz, but its main runs can be overloaded at busy times.

Lech, obviously Very Happy Absolutely no competition whatsoever. Stuben's pretty nice as well.

As 2plank mentioned, it's a bit wild in Solden, or a bit wild for me which may not mean much, and I've only been there for the odd night out of season.

But, Lech to me is about perfect as a ski station, there's a mix of terrain across the who domain from the gentler slopes above Lech to the more hard core stuff elsewhere. In fact, for the 2nd time today, here's some photo's. If anyone tell's you it's unaffordable and expensive double check they've been Very Happy

Saalbach is my favourite. Very pretty village, good snow cover, good nightlife and hotels. The skiing is brilliant with easy and quick access. In fact, it's not far from perfect, hence we are going back for some more next year! When we first went we had about 6-9 weeks skiing ranging between the group.

Try Hotel Bauer, central, good food and good rooms - really comfy beds and heated bathroom floor!

There was a couple of shots on one of the itineraries from Zurs back to Lech, nothing a red-run skier couldn't do and enjoy. There's loads of reds and blues round Lech anyway.

Interesting that St Anton was rated as 10. IMHO St Anton is the only world class resort in Austria, certainly the only Austrian resort that can challenge the major French ski-stations in terms of terrain and difficulty, whilst as far as apre-ski is concerned it's in a class of its own.

I second ise on Lech. Great place with all the on/off/apres piste variety you could possibly wish for. If you really want to get away from it and are not so heavily into the apres scene then try Oberlech or Zug. Oberlech I can highly recommend . It is a car free zone, and has an amazing network of tunnels linking the cable car station to each of the Hotels in the village. You get out of the cable car, your baggage is collected and taken to the hotel and you walk underground to the Hotel of your choice! Great.

Alternatively I would try Kitzbuehel, but not if you are going early in the season, i.e not before mid January.

Don't discount the Gastein valley: large ski area in total 200km (if you don't mind some short bus links), and as much advanced skiing as anywhere in austria (save St A). Bad Gastein itself more of a town than a pretty ski village, but apres is varied (casino, thermal baths) not just wall-to-wall boozing like some places. Snow reliability average, but I went there in late Jan a couple of years back and there was plenty. If you go stay near the railway station & main gondola, as those pavements can be steep.....

Like ise and Mike Lawrie, , I enjoyed Lech. I found the area quite varied, there was skiing for everyone with good access. Quite a friendly place when I was there, seemed very clean and tidy off the slopes. I did'nt notice food on the hill being any more expensive than elsewhere in the Arlberg.

The fact that Lech has a bigger ski area than some of the other Austrian resorts certainly appeals. Last year we went to Saas Fee, and whilst we had a great week in spectacular scenery, the limited amount of pistes was a bit frustrating by the second half of the week.

Ben, you have access to around 200km of piste in Saalbach-Hinterglemm-Leogang. No buses are required as the lift infrastructure is excellent. I also prefer a large ski area and wouldn't go less than 150km now.

Other Austrian resorts not mentioned (much) with a large ski area and good night life include:

Mayrhofen/Ziller Valley - although buses are required between some resorts/ski areas, but each area is large enough for a full day of skiing. In total, you have around 600km of piste covered under one lift pass which also includes buses, trains etc. All for £120 for 6 days.

Ski Welt (250km) - also has a pretty good lift infrastructure although not as modern as perhaps Saalbach, Ischgl, Lech etc, but perfectly adequate. Good value skiing with reasonably priced hotels, food etc. Stay in Soll for the best nightlife. It's fairly small but very lively.

It doesn't stand comparison with the other resorts mentioned here, but I'd be interested to know whether those who know Austria well have come across the tiny resort of St Oswald. Near Bad Kleinkirchheim in Carinthia. It was the scene of our first family ski holiday. We went with Inghams (I think) in self-catering - unusual for Austria. The ski area is very small, but we were all beginners - just some dry slope lessons in preparation. The five of us were in five different ski school classes. I was in a German speaking class, my rusty O level German supplemented by translations from a linguistically talented elderly Dutch nun. The apartment was fantastic, compared to many French apartments we stayed in subsequently, and the best part was an outdoor/indoor swimming pool, ten yards from the apartment door and available free, drawing on the natural hot springs in the area. The resort doesn't appear to have been in the brochures recently. Probably too far, much too small, not much English spoken, etc. But for us, at the time, it was perfect. And it felt like being "abroad". The kids survived not being surrounded by other English kids for a week and though their lack of comprehension of German led to a few problems from time to time that's part of what travel should be about!

Hi, I am from St. Anton and so I have to say and I really enjoy to say St. Anton is a very good place. I love it, and I would never change with someone else. But I think it gives a lot of really nice places in Austria. It depend on your own. Depend on your interests...
Good look with searching...

As good as St A is, for a 6-7 weeker maybe Sallbach would be a better choice. However, if you are a strong 7 weeker St A has some fantastic excursions from the top of the cable car. But you had better like very long mogul fields because you aren't likeley to get there before the ski-bums Of course, that isn't all they have got but the blues are generally dissapointing in my view. It does offer a bus connection to Zurs and Lech though and St A should be on your list of visits sometime. Saalbach is a large piste bashers paradise though the nightlife is nowhere near as rowdy as St A though the apre-ski ski off the slopes is good.... St A used to be dominated by Aussie ski bums running coat rackets from bars when I was last there and that got on my nerves if you are out for a few drinks...!! Now that I can't handle drinking all night and skiing all day that probably wouldn't affect me very much these days...

Maybe add Soll to your list as well

Thats true David. I don´t want to say that St. Anton is the very very best. It´s just I say it depends on what someone want. St. Anton is very good at offpiste, and a classical village. Ischgl is for me a bit overcrowed. And I think some of the skieres are not there because of skiing. They are there to drink and drink and drink.
Think about that

Saalbach would definitely be on the top of my list. The skiing is great, apres ski just right and the village is very attractive. The ski circuit has everything that a mere mortal could need, from gentle blues at the top of Bernkogel to thigh burning blacks like the one at Schattberg.

If I won the lottery this weekend, Saalbach would be the place where I'd buy my chalet, which hopefully say a lot.

Hi omikin, Welcome to snowHeads. I have been a couple of times. There is a good variety as each of the 4 mountains has a slightly different feel. There are lots of reds and blues, but a few blacks as well and off piste if you wish. There has been some discussion here about the place. A useful article referenced on one thread was this one http://www.dcski.com/articles/view_article.php?article_id=797&mode=headlines.

To find articles on Schladming on this site, you can use the search facility. On the mountain picture at the top you will find a drop down menu under "user facilities". Click on search and type in Schladming. Doing this will give you this among other threads. http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?p=142038

Ben,

Take your pick, personally I would go back to any of these year after year. Infact Saalbach hinterglemm I do.The only problem is that I can't do them all in a single year.

Saalbach-Hinterglemm. Big intermediate area, very good apres scene, 1050m moderate resort height, plenty for a week, good off piste when snow is fresh, linked to leogang (excellent day out), good mountain resturants, very friendly, I prefer to stay in Hinterglemm, well connected lift system allows you to ski both sides of the valley, ski back to the village, good ski school, ok for vearly intermediates.

St Anton. Large area intermediate/advanced area, linked to Lech and Zurs (worthwhile taking a day to visit these), good resort height, challenging runs, killer apres scene, good off piste and extreme opportunities, not the easiest lift system to use, ski back to the town, slightly higher prices, not realy for the timid skier, hardcore!

Ischgl. Big intermediate/advanced area, Linked to Galtur (easy intermediate, but beutifully empty on a sunday, and huge fun), also linked ti Samaun in switzerland (another good day out), really good apres scene,
Good off piste opportunities, resort height is about 1500m, ski back to the village, well connected lift system allows you to move all over the peaks with ease, good resurants, slightly higher cost that saalbach hinterglemm but worth it.

Schladming. Large intermediate area, lots of lifts but travelling from one area to another means that you can spend too long sitting on lifts, never seems to be enough resturants, suberb tree lined runs, good spres scene, ski back to the town (but not easay black or tough red), reasonable cost, low town (700m)height but seems to keep the snow well, limited off piste, huge amount of other resorts covered on the same ski pass(about 850km in total), good fun skiing amongst the trees.

Obertauern. Good intermediate area, 1700m village, apres is ok but the choice is limited, good lift system allows you to ski the lift circut in either direction. could use a few more resurants, when its cold here its really cold, very snow sure, some off piste, but you must ski Gemelstein 2 (steepest slope in austria), OK forc early intermediate, always ski back to the village, often ski through the cetre of the village, not the largest ski area.

Obergurgl. Easy intermediate skiing, not the largest ski area, very high, very snow sure, off piste is good with fresh snow, more expensive than most resorts, mountain resturants not a friendly or charming as other resorts, efficent lifts allow you bo get around easily, routes back to obergurgl and hochgurgl always open,
weather can be a little extreme sometimes, apres scene is a little limited.

Regards

Bob

Ben, No-one has mentioned either Steinach or Neustift. Steinach may not suit as it's a little place. Not many lifts, but lots of great off piste and a really warm welcome - no TOs! My favourite Austrian place. Very Happy

Neustift is the larger (not big) village in the Stubaital, and from it you have access to several different villages and also to the Stubaiergletscher with it's guaranteed ski-ing. However, it would be an advantage to have your own car in Neustift and then you could just go wherever you like. Very Happy No TOs there either. Both are less than one hour from Innsbruck. Very Happy Very Happy

I'm a Solden fan. There are a couple of English operaters going there again but they tend to have the big hotels on the main road where I think it can be rowdy. One has the Sunny Solden which looks to be on teh wrong side of the river looking at the street map but is actually reasonably placed for the Giggijoch lifts. However, the best way is to go DIY and get a B&B on the hillside above the town; pick carefully and you can get ski in /ski out. My favourite is Haus Karl Gruner (renamed Gruner-Hof this year) up at Plor. There's plenty of restaurants up there so you don't have to go down into town at night if you don't want to. To get there, take teh train to Otztal and bus up the valley (last bus is early evening unfortunately) or you can get lifts on the transfer coaches. On occasion, I've used Obergurgl coaches and persuaded them to stop as they go through Solden.
