Does anyone know where I can find resources on avalanche transceivers? What I'm after is information (technical / scientific) on how they work (i.e. the physics), also anything to do with international standards (ISO, DIN etc) that they may conform to. The combined power of snowheads may save me many hours on google...!
Its for a research project.
Cheers!
Any opinions on what you think are the best models and why would be useful as well! Personally I've used Ortovox (several models), Pieps, Barryvox and Tracker. I found Tracker the easiest to use (quickest to find burial), but was told they're not great for multiple burials.

you'll find this stuff discussed exhaustively on the forums at www.telemarktips.com
forums at www.couloirmag.com are pretty good too
i have experience of using ortofox f1 and m2 and the tracker. the tracker is probably the easiest just to pick up and use. however, i bought the f1 because it has better range both transmitting and receiving. the m2 is pretty good too but more expensive and not significantly easier to use (in my opinion). i think i was quite lucky in that i just "got it" fairly quickly.
as far as international standards are concerned, i think the only one is that they all transmit on the same frequency now. that's probably the most important one! it's 457 somethings, mHz i think. as far as the physics is concerned, it's pretty simple. i think you'd be best off reading the relevant chapter in bruce tremper's "staying alive in avalanche terrain". he describes much better than i could.
i have a recollection that one of the forums i mentioned above had a thread a while back about an electronic schematic of a transceiver which would probably be worth searching for

A number of us acquired the Mammut/Barryvox model and like it. It does what we want it to do in practice and thankfully hasn't needed to be used in anger. Acquired from someone online, can't recall who, and can't find them again. I thought it was Facewest but can't see them on their site.

Ellis Brigham are doing 20% off Ortovox tranceivers this month, if that is what you were looking for Shame the tracker DTS isn't discounted because it seems to be the infrequent use / inexperienced tranceiver of choice
huckingfellers, thanks for that - a worthwhile read

That's my take as well, I have a pair of F1's and a DTS, part of the thinking for the DTS was to have one to hand people who hadn't used transceivers much.

... although once you've bought your own there's no excuse for being an infrequent or inexperienced user. you should practice as much as you can

Fat chance in 28oC! but then my tranceiver is still in the shop.

Thanks for the links guys. Some new stuff I hadn't seen....
I wish they were cheaper though - I can't believe they are complex enough to warrant the price tag

You're probably right. But look on the bright side, they don't wear out and they don't go out of fashion so you shouldn't need to replace them every other year

They are though, unlike your iPod or digital camera there'll never be enough units shipped to reduce manufacturing cost significantly sadly.

I agree.
Although the other way of looking at it is bring prices down so everyone could be potentially safe. Although, only as safe as the quality of the decisions and practise you have to start.

lewis, Check out the PIEPS DSP, www.pieps.at. Very effective for multible burials - (practice experience only thankfully!)
