Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

hi - just got a new job that ties me to school hols.... what a HORRIBLE wake up call ... so used to getting cheap deals etc.
Hubby likely to be out there and meeting me with a car - so I only want one way - and with a car location of the airport/station is not too much of an issue...
BA prices are available but horrendous. Cant make it to start points for snowtrain by the time they leave (school doesnt finish till 3.30).
Any ideas of flight possibilities/destinations or other ways to go... or am I just going to have to pay the earth!
Thanks xx

jayne durham, you'll just have to be the first to book on Easyjet I suppose. I have managed cheap (ish), but usually Easter and New Year. I was going to suggest Turin, but the Olympics will be on then.

Is there a specific destination u are trying to get to?
The direct overnight Euro* to France doesn't leave Waterloo until about 8PM which would be easy enough from Sussex. But it is a sitting service with no couchettes.
It's hardly the cheapest option either.

I would guess that the low cost airlines have as many cheap seats on half term as any other week, it's just that the demand is higher so they'll disappear far sooner after their release.

Last time I booked with Easyjet for the 8am GVA flight on the Saturday of half term it was about £245. That was on the first day they released the flights. A few weeks later the price had risen to £400. It pays to be first in the queue for flights at peak periods.

I seem to recall that you can go by coach from Victoria for about £70 or so to quite a few different resorts with National Express(?). I expect that you would have to book well in advance for half term and they don't have the winter timetables on line yet. snowcoach also go to a couple of the main areas.

Coach is obiously less comfortable than flying, but should be cheaper.

jayne, if you split the travel into component parts and travel via Paris you may be able to bring the cost down. The cheapest (return) fare to Paris is £59. You might have to catch an early morning train to get that fare.
From there, French rail sell what are called 'Prem's' (discount) fares to numerous destinations, including Geneva. They are sold as singles, about £25 one-way if you book early enough. You print the ticket from your computer on A4 paper. Another link to look at is Lille-Lyon, skipping Paris. I don't think you'd get a discount fare into the Alpine stations, but have a look.
I'm assuming you want to travel on the Saturday - right?

Alitalia to Milan.
When I booked about a month ago a family of 4 to geneva was £400 each (return).
Milan £100 each (return). Good flight times too.

Drive to Verbier where we are going is around 3 hours instead of 1.5 but for £1200 of hard saved cash I'll drive the extra 1.5 hours!

I booked with BA a month or two ago, prices to Geneva OK. You'll have to book a return, it's cheaper than single.

Rob - thanks for the fix on easyjet prices - £245 seems the earth to me! Usually pay about £40 return for ryan air!... I think I will need to totally readjust my ideas of what is good value!
Will investigate snowcoach... thanks
And thanks for the suggestion of Alitalia - will have a look at them too.
admin - flexible about destination coz hubby will already be out there with a car - so we dont mind a bit of a drive - and we havent fixed on a resort yet - I am just trying to get in to the general area.

BA could do you £209.30; you'd arrive late on Sat 11.02.06 and waste the return ticket. You could go out at a much more civilised time on the Fri for the same money.

Alternatively Paris to Geneva is about 3.5 hours on the TGV last train at 20.34 from Paris Gare de Lyon, first train at 07.10 it stops at Bellegarde about 30mins earlier which is just off the A40 in France

Better yet Paris to Lyon is only 2 hours on the TGV and the last train departs Paris at 22.00 whilst the first leaves at 07.00

Ray Zorro, train travel in France is very cheap, example 29 Euros Bourg St Maurice to St Etienne. SNCF also have special offers called PREMS which start as low as 19 Euros and are available on all TGV services. They must be booked in advance and are available between 14 - 60 days before your date of travel, they do however, get booked out quickly as there only a limited number of PREMS tickets for each service. Go to www.sncf.com for details.

jayne durham, have you thought about Ryan Air to St Etienne, not the most convenient of locations but it's about 3 - 3 1/2 hrs from Bourg St Maurice by train from St Etienne, there's a shuttle bus from the airport to the station. I think there's only one flight per day so timing is critical.

Why do the French insist on putting rail, bus, and plane terminals all next to each other. It is very inconvenient for us Brits who expect to travel miles for such connections.

jayne durham, We have had the same dilemma, but by moving departure and arrival from London -> GVA to Birmingham -> Lyon we now have affordable flights at £140 return with BA. When is your 1/2 term? 11th or 18th?

jayne durham, if you can go mid week Flybe from Southampton to Chambery might suit you. I got a return in late January for £83 incl all taxes etc. But I don't think Flybe have their winter flights released yet.

Slight Hi-jack does any one know when Eurotunnel put their 2006 charges on the internet?

boredsurfin, Eurotnnel and Eurostar are very bad at getting the information up early, one year Eurostar didn't update their website for almost a month after they'd made changes to timetable and charging, the best option is to email their customer service people and ask them when they are likely to have the information and then email or call them on that date to get hold of it

Didn't I read somewhere that Eurotunnel are going over to a budget airline style of pricing ? The early booker gets the lowest prices. And if you can travel at weird times of day, even cheaper. Mind you there are also rumours in the financial press that the whole thing might be declared bankrupt soon.

jayne durham, I had clients last winter who came from Ireland via paris. Cheap flight Dublin/Paris and then train to Granoble. the TGV is really wonderful - nothing like the poxy British trains (clean too). From Gatwick you must be able to get a cheapie to paris, even in half term.

You can get a bus service from Gatwick to Heathrow BTW. Eurostar and the TGV trains are much cheaper at the weekends - none of those business exec types paying top dollar.

but... BA can do you £156.30 from City Airport (unless I've cocked up again.).

I met a Belgian girl last winter, who had found a very cheap lift from Belgium to the Alps on a kind of "hitch hikers guide" web site - she had paid a modest contribution to petrol, as had the two other passengers in the car. The website regulates payments in some way - it sounded a good idea. Maybe somebody knows about it?
