Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Help! Saalbach/ Hinterglemm

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
We are finding that we are already being priced out of Saalbach for next year.

I'm trying to book for 7 people to Saalbach for 25/2/2006 but virtually every tour operator is already booked up for that week and we are struggling to get a good hotel and decent price. Most that are left are extortionate and we are not paying £850 for a week and that's just the hotel!

Can anyone recommend a hotel is Saalbach which covers the following:

We want a reasonable standard hotel as some are part time skiers and want a leisure club and one has specific food requirements which means that 3.5 star is a minimum. It has to be walking distance to a lift (5 mins) and fairly central. So we don't ask for much! We also need a single room. The Bauer is full and so is the Berger Sport (at least they don't have any singles left and only expensive rooms).

We may consider Hinterglemm so can anyone tell us if it is as lively as Saalbach as we like good apres ski. The other option at this rate is Schladming. I'd go back to Mayrhofen but the beginners want more ski convenience.

Thanks.

A bit of an extreme, but from memory Zell-Am-See (Zee?) is quite close, so if you stay there you can easily drive between the two. The big hotel in Zell is right on the lake and probably has what you want. Could be as expensive though, but there are plenty there.

skanky, cheers, but at least 3 of the group want to get to the lifts without the added transport issue so it probably wouldn't work. I've been to Zell twice and I liked it but there isn't enough terrain to occupy us for the whole week so we would definitely have to travel.

Hinterglemm is a fine base. Apres ski is lively and hotels are good standard.

However, nobody ever said packages were going to be cheap -especially with all your requirements. Leogang may be the cheap way in to the Saalbach ski circus, but I do not think it is famed for apres ski.

I am not sure what week you are looking at. If you cannot go low season, you may find it costs more than you are prepared to pay.

The area is full of German number plates, which probably indicates high prices.

Ski Welt, Kitzbuhel, BadGastein are all extensive areas but cheaper. Then again Obergurgl is less extensive - but even more expensive.

Latchigo, we went to Saalbach last year (same week - end of Feb) and didn't have this problem. It was a bit more than other resorts but all of a sudden prices seem to have rocketed and availability is really limited. We could go a week later but I'm worried it may be too mild then but we may not have any choice. I will have a quick look at Hinterglemm. We've been to the other resorts with the exception of Obergurgl and really want to go back to Saalbach so I'm trying to exhaust that first!

hayley t, it may be half-term that week? Isn't easter later next year, I'd expect half-term to perhaps be a week later? You might be better to look at earlier instead?

skanky, it's the week after half term and we can't go any earlier unfortunately. There is the option of DIY but this works out about the same. Prices seem to have gone mad the last year or so and a good example is the cost of a learn to ski pack this year in Mayrhofen was £195 per person. Next year it's £235??? How can a £40 difference be justified when lift passes don't later that much year on year etc.

At the moment it's Hinterglemm or a week later. Any views on snow conditions the first/second week in March or any views on the Hotel Wolf in Hinterglemm anyone?

hayley t, we were in Hinterglemm last Christmas, and intend going again this year, although we haven't booked yet. Sounds like we'd better get on with it!

We weren't ever in Saalbach for apres ski, we'd always made it back to Hinterglemm by then, but the apres ski was pretty mad every night in two places - one was the Goatstall which is on the last run down, or a bit of a walk up from the village, and the other was the big outside bar of the Hotel Dorfschmeide, which has outdoor heating and a roof.

The action later on in the evening was probably not as buzzing as Saalbach, but still plenty of bars and places to go. We didn't go out much after dinner, because we apres skiied so much beforehand! But our two boys (15 and 18 ), and two other girls the same ages were out every night and seemed to find plenty to keep them out late. Christmas was quite quiet too, so February will probably be a lot busier.

Peter B, it's more than both the Bauer and Berger, so it's out of our price range really.

So that rules out the Reiterhof as well then!

Peter B, yep, and the Saalbacherhof and the Ingonda (which only has 2 rooms left). I think I might just take a tent Puzzled

Generally, it's impossible to get anything near our requirements for under £700 (that's just the flight and hotel) so we are trying to keep it as close to that as possible. When we went last year (booking at a similar time, same week in Feb) we got the Bauer for about £620 (includes discount). Now, we're lucky to get the equivalent for £100 more.

hayley t, I think a lot of people have realised that the resort is so good that demand has been pushed up, resulting in prices going the same way. Of all the places that I've been, it's the place that I'd definitely go back to without a second's hesitation. I prefered it to Switzerland and France. It has superb skiing plus a brilliant atmosphere.
Good luck with your hunt. Hinterglemm has greta atmosphere until 7 ish but then goes a lot quieter. You could always stay in Hinterglemm and party in the evenings in Saalbach. The taxi fare was only 10 Euros last year for an 8 seater bus.

Peter B, Thanks, you are probably right as it's still fairly early to be booking but everyone seems to be grabbing rooms. I can understand why, it's a great place. Maybe we shouldn't rave about it too much! I think we'll end up with the Berger in Saalbach which seems to come in ok - just, and the single person is content to pay a huge supplement - she must love skiing and Saalbach! It better be worth it - I'm sure it will!
