Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Crunch time in the Alpine World Cup

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Unstoppable early in the season, despite his form in the speed events at the World Championships, Bode Miller knows this weekend could decide the destination of the crystal globe for the overall title. Less that 200 points adrift, Benni Raich is favourite for this weekend's technical events in Kranjska Gora (Slovenia) - the GS on Saturday is followed by Sunday's slalom - an event which Bode Miller has finished on just one occasion all season. Even in the GS Miller seems to be struggling. Miller has not won a giant slalom since Val d'Isere in mid-December and failed to finish the world championship GS.

The fight for the women's title is even closer. San Sicario sees three events over the weekend, starting this morning at 10 am with the Super G (live on Eurosport). Although allrounders Anja Paerson and Janica Kostelic, separated by just 8 points, have a good lead in the overall rankings over the likes of Goetschl and Michaela Dorfmeister, the Austrians are still top of the Super G and downhill points tables, Goetschl in particular having achieved the fastest time in downhill training this week. With 300 points at stake for the winners of the three races (Super G today, downhill tomorrow and combined Sunday), they could cut back on the deficit if the Swedish and Croatian stars fail to perform.

Any news of whether Finlay Mickel is in the running to make the World Cup finals?

rob@rar.org.uk, after Garmisch, these quotes from www.snowracers.net ... it won't be easy.

Quote:
With one race of the regular season to go, places for the Lenzerheide Finals are starting to be sorted out. Patrik Jaerbyn (sweden) sits in 25th at the moment. Two Swiss racers, Hoffman and Zurbriggen sit above him yet the in form Andi Schifferer is hot on his tail. With Finlay Mickel twenty points in arrears it may seem that he has blown his opportunity to go to the finals. Konrad Bartelski certainly seems to think so: "This was a missed opportunity," rued Bartelski after the run.

Quote:
“This is a hard course and has some scary points yet on a good day I am worth a top twenty result,” explained Mickel. “This result leaves me with a solid fighting chance for the qualifying for the World Cup Finals.” Phil McNichol, Head Coach of the American team who Mickel trains with, believes “it is touch and go for Mickel, yet the door is still open.”

Thirteen more points in the bag from the two races in Garmisch, not one of his favourite courses, leaves Mickel heading to Kvitfjell in Norway in two weeks for the final regular World Cup Downhill of the season. Mickel must score more than twenty points (13th place) to have a chance of making the cut in twenty fifth spot for a ticket to Lenzerheide. “It is an achievable goal!” Mickel confidently says and believes! With two weeks of training to prepare for the final onslaught, Mickel will be totally focused on making the dream happen.

Thanks - lets hope he comes out with a season's best performance in Kvitfjell.

Patrik Jaerbyn (sweden) sits in 25th at the moment.

But Jaerbyn injured himself in Garmish: will he be able to compete?

Dislocated shoulder - still might recover in time to compete in Kvitfjell. But only 25 (plus the World Junior Champ in the discipline as of Feb 23rd, 18 year old Slovenian Rok Perko) qualify and Finlay still lies 28th...

And injuries don't count, in that injured skiers aren't replaced if they can't take part. For example Deneriaz and Cuche are out for the season... The only way Finlay can get through is on merit by scoring 20 WC points or more in the final race, ie by finishing at worst 13th, and hoping that Aamodt (breathing down his neck just 4 pts further back) doesn't pull off the kind of result he's quite capable of.
