Anyone know the rough cost of a taxi from turin airport to Sauze D'oulx?
(If it is too expensive we will use train...)
Also - returning via central Turin to pick up in laws and take them to lunch before we fly back...
Anyone know if we can leave luggage/skis at Turin rail station - and any suggestions of somewhere to go for lunch near the station - that doesnt cost an arm and a leg?
Thanks snowheads.
xx
ps - mind you looking at the snow reports for Sauze - we might as well leave the skis at home!!!!!!!

jayne, I'm guessing at about £30 to £40. If you have accommodation in the resort they will almost certainly be able to arrange a local taxi to pick you up, which will be cheaper than an airport taxi.
Are you able to switch to a resort with higher skiing in the Val d'Aosta? They are very easy from Turin, too. Webcams.

thanks David - staying up the mountain so not sure if they can do taxi arrangements...but its worth emailing them - hadnt thought of that..
Also not going for 3 weeks - could switch resorts - but lots can change in 3 weeks..... hard call..... hate snow guessing (but cant really complain coz it will be our 4th trip this year - and the others we have been v. lucky w. snow)

Taxi to Oulx will be at least £80 as that motorway has the most expensive tolls in Europe (£11.50 each way). The train is very cheap at 7 euro's and the coach from the airport to the station (45min trip) is 5 euro's. Disadvantage is the journey can take 2.5 to 3hours if you miss connections.

Thanks very much Chris - we've done coach/train before...
Just feeling a bit fed up coz Ryan air have changed the flight times home. Used to be able to ski the day - then public transport to get back in plenty of time for a 10.30pm flight. I think they've brought it forward to about 6pm!.... but if that is how much a taxi is.... we'll do the train again.

Funny enough was just looking this up the other day. Came across a BBC page from some holiday program where they'd done a long weekend there. They said about £90 for taxi.
I'm thinking about getting one back the other way to hire a car in Turin and head for Val Thorens what with the snow conditions in the Milky Way

Assuming you are arriving at Torino Caselle airport, your options are these:
1. Caselle-Torino-Oulx-Sauze d'Oulx
To get the train, you need to get to Torino Porta Nuova station.
By coach (public, runs about once every half an hour) - Cost: €6.50 each, one way - Time: 40 mins
By Taxi - Cost: €30-35 one way - Time: 30 mins
Train to Oulx
First Class: €6.50 each, one way
Second Class: €4.30 each, one way
Runs about once every 90 minutes. Last train to Oulx at about 19:30. HOWEVER, last train to Oulx when the Oulx-Sauze-d'Oulx coach is running leaves at 18:00. Different times on sundays. Last coach/train to Torino leaves Sauze at 18:45.
Time: about 1 hour 15 minutes.
Coach Oulx-Sauze d'Oulx:
Cost: €1.25 each, one way. Get tickets from the station.
Time: 15 minutes
Coaches usually leave about 10-15 minutes after the train arrives, but will usually wait if the train is late.
2. Caselle-Sauze d'Oulx
Taxi:
Cost: about €125 each way. Could be negotiated if booked in advance.
Time: 1 hour 15 (depends on traffic). (have done it in 48 minutes, sticking to the speed limit. If the speed limit is 200kph.)
Hire Car
Cost: depends on car and time of year. Between €50 and €80 per day minimum, plus fuel (depends - maybe €50) and tolls (approx €15 each way).

As has been stated in another thread, you'll find it to be a rather long trip from Turin to VT - unless you are prepared to ski some of the way of course

How far is it then? I heard elsewhere it was about a 2 hour car trip from Sauze, does that sound way off the mark?

Jayne, surprised if ATS is outrageous for your trip - we are using them for Les Arcs - Geneva at €67 one way - which is I agree not free, but I think is OK for 120km, and on a Friday not a Saturday.

thanks for all the advice - Nick we have used the train before - but thanks so much for all the detail - but last time the Ryan air flt home was 10.30pm meaning we could ski the day and then travel - now they have moved it forward to 6pm - so we were wondering about other methods of transport.
Jim - ATS is 80 euros p person each way - which just seems ghastly when you have only paid £35 each for a return flight!
If the snow starvation continues in Italy - might consider hiring a car and driving somewhere with some snow....need to look at a map and see what is viable.

jayne durham, we found the best way was the hire car in the end, and it's a reasonably nice drive up too. You could pop over the Col de Montgenvre to Briancon (but the snow's not too good there either, or back down towards Turin, and through the Frejus tunnel . Cheapest car hire we found was through www.travelsupermarket.com (It searches all the other websites for you!)
