Has anyone of you snowHeads done a season the easy way, i.e. not working just skiing? I'd love to find out where you went, how you got on, what the other seasonaires were like, etc.

'Seasonaire'. Posh word for 'ski bum'.
'Who wants to be a seasonaire?' "Can I phone a friend, Chris?" "No, you can ask the [Snowheads] audience."
'Seasonaire'. A good word for an Italian waiter, wielding his gigantic black pepper mill.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Let me try again. I was a seasonaire once only on Cairngorm in the winter 1974-5. A great winter for snow. A great winter for Aviemore. And the work was so much fun (and the skiing so limited) it didn't really matter not to have much time off!
Sorry to labour the 'seasonaire' definition, but can you be a seasonaire without working? I think that's a 'skivaire'.

A great friend of mine spent a season in Val D'Isere a few years ago. Needless to say that he was on a very tight budget... to the extent that 9 of them ended up sharing a studio apartment - just matresses on the floor and stuff everywhere.
He had a brilliant time - went through 5 pairs of skis, skied just about everything there was going, and to make ends meet he did a little bit of ski guiding and cleaned the floor of the Supermarche U for an hour each evening!
He was out every evening (too depressing to stay in the flat) & made some great friends who he still travels (from Australia) to ski with every couple of years.
Not a bad way to spend a season!

Do ski bums get bored?
Only if they get board.
Maybe that's why the term 'ski bum' is giving way to 'seasonaire'. The word doesn't discriminate against boarders.
Then again, 'snow bum' would have been a perfectly good replacement.
And most appropriate for boarders.
Who spend much of the time on their bums, in the middle of the piste, just over the brow of the hill.

You know it makes sense.

Puns aside, working is a great way to meet people in resort, and add structure A whole winter is a long time and after a while being on the mountain by yourself looses its appeal. If you're bumming a season chances are that you've either got pots of cash and renting somewhere amazing so won't be mixing with the bunk-bed masses, or living in a van with a wood burning stove in a car park down the hill...

A friend is doing a season without working at the moment. OR at least that is how he started. I think he found it a bit boring and lonely so now he's doing some guiding to keep himself amused. He got bored with skiing on his own after a while. He is in Courchevel so plenty of skiing, I'm not sure how the other saisonaires treat him but will ask him next time he calls!!
