Poster: A snowHead

One of my mates is thinking about buying a pair of 1080's or similar. One thing that is confusing him and me is these type of ski's tend to be cheaper than other new ski's. Anyone know why??

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

Preston Pete, Skis are usually priced in two ways, firstly how new a design they are, 1080's are not the newest design so won't command a newness premium and secondly by how much they cost to make (usually) down to a combination of complexity of design and cost of materials.
In the end if your mate likes the skis and skis well on them he should buy them

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

1080s don't have all the extra bits to accommodate an integrated binding system. This makes them considerably cheaper to manufacture.
If he buys them, don't ski behind him - twin-tips throw up rooster-tails and you'll get splattered!

He's not good enough to keep up with me therefore skiing behind him is never an issue (I hope he reads this thread)

Preston Pete, They are an easy ski to ski on, so beware he might improve rapidly But if there is any Ice or hard pack he'll have serious problems otherwise good value and VG offpiste.

On the other hand, if they're an easy ski to ski on they he might not improve at all.

telford_mike has hit the nail on the head: with 1080s you will have to add on the cost of the bindings. Most other skis nowadays come with pre-mounted integrated bindings for an all-in price, which is (naturally) higher than the price for the ski alone. The good thing about that is that he can transfer his existing bindings over (if he has any), or he can pick and choose exactly which new binding he wants.
The design of the 1080 was changed a couple of years back to make it wider (i.e. better off-piste) but I hear it is still pretty versatile. If he doesn't go off-piste or into the terrain park he may be better off with something else tho.....
I ski a pair of Rossi twin-tips and spraying out rooster-tails is all part of the fun!!!
