Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Snow chains - a must for Austria?

 Poster: A snowHead

We're driving from Calais to Munich next Friday and then from Munich to St Anton on the Saturday. The motor is a 4X4. Do I need snow chains? If so, any tips on where I might buy or rent some? I've seen prices ranging from £80 to £200 which seems pricey if they never come out of the wrapping. Could be good insurance though! Puzzled

4X4 is useful but in some conditions chains are required. Unless you have winter tyres 4x4 alone may not be enough. Depending on the 4x4 you have you may need special chains that are not widely available in garages or supermarkets on the continent as they are for say, a Mondeo or similar.

The bad news is a lot of 4X4's aren't too good in snow though and some that are require some skill.

If the 4x4 has proper winter tyres then I'm almost certain you won't need chains. The road between St Anton and Lech often requires snow chains but the road into St Anton from Innsbruck is less likely to get snowed out. Have you asked the car rental firm if they have chains and could make them available? Make sure the chains supplied will fit the your rental car and are not simply a set taken from another rental car with different tyre dimensions.

As ise says, all four wheel drive vechiles are not equal. What particular model are you renting?

You may find that the police will not allow anybody up the valley without chains but I don't think the road is too bad. Unless it is snowing you should be ok all the way to St Anton. Hope you are not up the hill in St Jakob because you may need them there...!!

A small piece of advice for anyone new to using snow chains: practice putting them on AND TAKING THEM OFF before using them for real!!

I made a dog's breakfast of removing a chain by the side of a road and got the thing wrapped round the axle. Big pain before I got it free!!

good point, should have mentioned that before, it can't be said too often. I've heard of people doing expensive damage.
