Poster: A snowHead
|
I just fractured my wrist snowboarding today, the piste was very hard and icy Not a very bad fracture though, just needs a splint (which I had to pay $19 for at the hospital, despite the fact that Canada has public healthcare). When I get back to boarding, I'm going to want some wrist guards. Does anyone know which ones are the best choice? Dakine's look good, but how well do they protect your wrists in practice?

ponder, sorry you had to find out the hard way. All snowboarders should wear wrist guards, like all footballers wear shin-pads.
Wrist fracture is very common (see Table 2). I use Level Half-pipes.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

make sure that they are specifically for snowboarding (as I am sure the DaKine ones are) - rollerblade guards are too rigid and simply transfer the force to another part of the wrist/arm. The newer snowboarding guards are designed to avoid that.
Sorry to hear about the break.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Here's some info about a new type of wrist guard and an integrated glove/guard combination designed to avoid the force transfer problem Tony mentions. From the New York Times
Here's the web site for the Flexguard system itself and there is an email for a GB Importer.

Ponder, the guy who taught me the basics of boarding said he would only do so if i bought some wrist guards, at first i thought he was a bit soft but it seems he knew what he was talking about. The hospital would have been better putting a cast on you could have been boarding tomorrow.
I have just purchased a helmet today that was a after thought from a bad fall last season luckily only my pride was damaged.
Hope you get fixed soon.
