Just what does this mean?! I only got a C at geography at O' level, and I wish people would stop publishing weather maps without accompanying explanations for dullards like me!

Perhaps they could do with a bigger scalemap so that their pilots wiil know where the ski lift cables are.

Would that help? It's easy to mistake a cable car for an Iraqi tank in the heat of battle, you know.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

The white and grey areas are cloud cover, the green, checked circles are rainfall and the blue X's are snowfall.
The blue, triangular lines are cold fronts and the red, semi-circled lines are warm fronts. Put simply, a cold front is the leading edge of a moving cold mass of air (relative to that currently being experienced) and a warm front the same only a warmer mass of air. Purple fronts are occluded, where a cold and warm front have merged. The temperature will normally change accordingly with the passage of the front (though remember it's relative cold and warmth we're taling about). The wind will also normally change as the front passes. Fronts are normally associated with cloud and rainfall.

Dave Burt, no worries. That chart has blue crosses over the NW Alps, so one forecaster thinks it will. They are predicting 4cm/hr for Friday and Saturday (it doesn't indicate how continuous this will be) with lighter snowfall stretching into Sunday.
I think there is a strong consensous between the various met organisations around Europe that the Alps will see some decent snow this weekend. As we're now down to 3-4 days, and given the nature of the set-up the forecasts should be pretty reliable.

As the other amateur met man on here I agree. It's going to snow this weekend in the Alps. Be confident.

I have to be confident - I'm hoping to be off to Val D'Isere on Sunday!
Just endulging in a bit of brinkmanship with the operator to get the best price!

You know it makes sense.

This looks promising, and thanks for the link - I've bookmarked it! High cirrus cloud came over this afternoon - usually a precurser to a change in the weather.... (Why isn't there a crossed fingers smiley when you want it?)

The USAF were supposed to do a B-52 demo at the Farnborough airshow this year, except they missed the airfield entirely and did the display at Blackbushe instead
