Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Prevent on-snow injuries: get a physio to check you out

Why go skiing and end up in the hands of a doctor, when it could all have been avoidable? If you know your body may cause you hassles why get it sorted out?

This interesting article from The Scotsman looks at the work of some innovative-sounding specialists at the Edinburgh Physiotherapy Centre who check out the defects in your anatomy (paying particular attention to the spine) and work on exercises that focus on specific problems that might cause problems on the snow.

Details of prices (£39 for the intitial assessment, £34 for follow-up sessions) are in the article, and here's the EPC's website.

Does anyone know of similar services around the country tailored to skiing or boarding?

Sorry, David Goldsmith, can't add any knowledge, but my initial skepticism evaporated completely when looking at the cost. For 39 quid, how can you possibly go wrong? Especially given the intransigent nature of back problems.

Sounds like a very excellent idea. Anyone aware of anything similar in London?

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I went to profeet in Fulham yesterday, to go through their process of biomechanical check and custom boot fitting. One of the things they do is get you on a "Skier's Edge" machine and do a video analysis. The guy there (Hamish) identified straight away that I cycled up hills a lot! Basically, my neutral, slightly flexed stance is pretty solid, but I go a bit bow-legged with my legs extended to the side. Apparently, the glutes, which get built up cycling, are involved in straightening the leg but also tend to bend them outwards. He showed me a stretch I should do that ought to help. Not sure I understood that bit of theory though.

The other issue I have is an Achilles' tendon repair that is less than supple. The footbed showed that I had a tendency to get my weight forward on that foot by leaning onto the ball rather than by flexing the ankle and keeping the foot flat. The insole has been made to partially compensate for that: again with a recommendation to stretch at the beginning of a session. No excuses now! (The boots are Salomon X-Wave 8.0's, BTW)
