Hello all,
I'm about to start working the season in Megeve...just wondering who's been there before and the general opinion on the resort. Any good tips?!

I have skied there several weeks, really enjoyable. A lot of the hotels guests won't ski when it's cloudy/snowy which leaves the slopes nice and quiet. Can be really good when it's snowing hard because there many tree lined slopes. Last winter the ski school wore Prada clothing which is in keeping with their Touraeg/Allroad/Range Rover driving guests. Some guides from Chamonix bring their clients there on heavy snow days because the off piste is easily accessible for mere mortals. A surprisingly big area with a lot of variety. Good Luck I'm sure you will have a great winter.

Only ever skied Megeve, when we got tired of Chamonix, very nice, pretty resort, but very chi-chi and the pistes remarkably well-groomed, some good restaurants at alititude. The skiing on Mont Joli is the most challenging.

Whitemoon, welcome! I've been going to Megève for years. It's quite large (though obviously not Three Valleys size), so you'll have quite a bit of scope. The best pistes are at Côte 2000 and the best off-piste is on Mt Joly (IMHO). The après ski is pretty varied and lively. You'll meet lots of other Brit seasonaires. It is a fairly expensive place.
I'm sure you'll have a great time!

My opinion is Megeve is too close to the trunk road N212 and therefore a lot of day trippers.
It has 3 areas; Megeve, Rochebrune and Combloux.
Main area Megeve is accessible by cable cars via St. Gervais, Demi Quarter and the bottom station link with Rochebrune. I think the Cote 2000 is in the Rochebrune which is quieter ski-wise than the Megeve.
I found the skiing area rather overused and hence bumpy. It is also fairly low altitude and I remember in one year around Feb/Mar the resort was fine in one day and not skiable the next day after a heavy rain. We ended up driving to 3 Vallee.
Never been to Combloux yet but there is only one cable car link between Megeve and Rochebrune. Not a bad place for skiing but the neighbouring Les Contamines is a lot smoother as less people go there.
The Megeve town is known for its classic style but we only did day trips to go there while we stayed in Chamonix.

Hey!
Thanks for the replies, sounds good! Not too worried about the reports of bad snow, it's not like I'm only going to be there for a few days! I'll definately keep you posted on snowreports etc.
cheers,
sx

You'll enjoy Megeve, we've had an apartment in St Gervais years and it's been fantastic. All the positive comment above is about spot on, especially the bit from snowbunny, a lot of the punters really do stay at home on bad weather days, I've had some of my best days ever in storms round the area. Mt Joly is quite excellent as reported as well.
Combloux is also excellent, small and some great skiing, and a fantastic lunch spot at the Auberge de Christomet.
Megeve doesn't attract an especially high number of day trippers, although Les Contamines can, this is simply because those who live round the area know the reputation for excellent snow at Les Contamines, it's also easier access from the Autoroute, driving up through Sallanches to Megeve can be a real pain. The excellent Les Contamines website has also generated them a lot of custom, it's one of the easiest places near GVA to check the snow from home

We just got back from Megeve, after an excellent week of sun, skiing, food and wine.
It hasn't snowed for a few weeks now, apart from a light dusting on Thursday, so the runs are becoming a little worn. The skiing is still good in the shady areas. Yesterday we explored Jaillet, and almost every run was exceptional... a nice way to end the trip.
For anyone planning on going, the town is picture perfect... there is heaps of fur walking around (on animals and humans), the food is exceptional (at the chalet we stayed at), and prices on the mountains are pretty expensive.
With the chalet provided ski guides, I managed to ski most of the areas. Mt D'Arbois was most fun, Jaillet had the best snow, Cote 2000 was ok, and the Rochebrune area was pretty average (just a personal opinion).
If you're in the area (around the corner from Chamonix), pop in! There was hardly anyone on the slopes!

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Just back from the half-term "fix". Conditions superb, as I'm sure they've been in the other Mt Blanc region resorts and I would guess further afield too. Lots of snow on first three days (and especially nights) and cold with clear periods and flurries on the next three days. Not as crowded as usual, I would guess become some people don't come out while it's actually snowing.
Tried out the new link from Jaillet / Christomet to Le Plan / Le Giettaz. It takes quite a while to get there: it's a 6.4 km track. It seems pretty good once you get there, but only had time for one top-to-bottom run as was getting late (due fantastic lunch at l'Auberge de Christomet - now officially my favourite mountain restaurant) and weather closing in. Two new pistes and drags get you back to the top of Christomet. The drags are of a different type to anything I've seen before: short poles on the end of retractable cords paid out from drums attached to the cable. You have to catch a moving pole as it comes round. Maybe they're commonplace elsewhere and I just don't get around enough!
Other than that, Côte 2000 was superb. Most of the powder was tracked PDQ though: must set the alarm earlier!
The only downside was that the water supply had failed on Mt d'Arbois (above the plateau) - due to lack of summer rainfall I'm told - resulting in all the loos being shut!
I'll publish one or two piccies in a bit.

That's why I've mentioned it several times, it's one of my favorites as well. I have their number programmed into my phone for making reservations.
