Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Is Tignes noisey?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Just booked a week in Tignes after Xmas and checked out the resort report on the SCGB site where back in March 2002 someone commented “But why oh why do they run a loud generator from 1.00 am until 4.00 am every night. I had to sleep in shifts! I never did find out what caused it but the noise of this machine bounced off the mountainside back into the resort in the early hours at an irritating volume all week”.

As I am a light sleeper I just wondered if anyone else had experienced this as well and if so does it still exist?

I've spent a couple of weeks in Tignes Le Lac and didn't notice it was any noisier than any other ski resort I've stayed in. I sometimes object to the sound of snowploughs keeping the roads clear in the early hours of the morning, but I suppose there's no other sensible time they can do that work.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I've stayed in Tignes (Le Lac) many times and have never noticed this noise. However, I usually wear ear plugs when staying away from home, as any sound (minibar fridges and air con systems are terrible offenders) keeps me awake... Confused

Last year our room overlooked the lake in Tignes Le Lac. If there had been any loud noise bouncing off the mountainside into the resort, we'd have been the first to hear it. We didn't.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Alan Craggs, that should definitely go on a list of "essential things to take on a ski trip". If you're self-catering, you never know whether you'll have neighbours that crash into the apartments at 3 in the morning, talking at the tops of their voices. Evil or Very Mad Hotels aren't much better.

Funiily enough, it was noisy on Sunday night. It was fine before and after, something to do with the cannons running and the wind direction I guess.

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

Thanks for the info, it does not sound (no pun intended) as if its a big problem then. I take ear plugs anyway as suggested above so it doubt if it will be a problem.

I remember posting that comment on the SCGB website. I never did find out what caused it, but it sounded like a generator that turned on prompt at 1.00 am and went off just as prompt at 4.00 am. Our room overlooked the lake and I think this may have been part of the problem - the mountains are more like a parabolic reflector in Le Lac!. I'm not letting it stop me from going again as I'm hoping it was a one off and the skiing was pretty damn good even early in the season. It didn't seem to bother my wife (who wears ear plugs) or my son (who would sleep through anything) but one or two other guests commented. Don't let it put you off, the snow was really worth it. But if you're concerned get a room looking away from the lake (although the view over the lake is really good!)

Colin,
I did check to see if it was something like that (honest!) - It's surprising what you end up doing in the early hours of the morning when you can't sleep. I wandered around Tignes in the the early hours on a few occasions to satisfy my curiosity, unsuccessfully (that's also how I found out the apres ski was relatively quiet in Le Lac, at least when we were there). I came to the conclusion it was either a generator or one of the lifts running for maintenance reasons, hence it was probably a one off and I was just a bit unlucky in my timing.
However... kebab vans... an interesting idea... can't say I've ever seen one in a resort, but can't say I've ever looked for one either!

Nick, just where are you puting these 10 pints? If it's down your throat and all stations to Stomach, then the next stop is Bladder, and surely you don't get much sleep as you have to keep getting up to pee.
