Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Jonpim, If you were transexual I might let you in, but a cross-dresser? Don't all women cross-dress while ski-ing? In fact ski-ing in dresses would be bl***y cold!

The idea of a snowheads get-together is great - maybe PG could come down from the Savoie and bring Hannah who could show all of us how to do it!a

Seriously though ... I ws thinking that if this could work (and the omens seem promising) then what about after easter. LDA is always open until the first weekend of May, and with easter being early this year the week after that (10th April), should be quite cheap, decent snow, and not too busy. It would probably be an extra week for most people. The week could be with/without family members as desired, but women only classes. For the better skiers we often have super off piste around that time of year, and may still be able to ski La Grave. If the party consisted of a number of snowheads, and the men wanted to do some off piste touring or something like that I could organise it with a friend (male) who knows the mountain really well. We have an advantage as well for the "plateaued" skiers in that lots of our blue runs have short steepr bits, which are excellent training, as when you can see it flattens out you have more confidence to try the steeper bits.

BTW LDA has the second largest off piste ski-ing area in France after Chamonix - not counting La Grave. I'll post again in a couple of days with more detailed suggestions.

Jonpim, as my membership has 2 days left. I managed to log in-an excellent discussion the Ski Club forum is improving by the day, coupled with the 20% discount at Castleford XScape, I might have to rethink my decision not to rejoin. Now where's that credit card. ?......................

Helen, there have been some good discussions there recently, but not sure if it's worth renewing just for that. Someone commented today during a discussion on black skiers: 'This has got to be one of the best threads I have read - eat your heart out snowheads' - a little bit of rivalry going on there maybe Wink

Cathy Coins, I'd have to have more than good topics on the forum, but-as I have discovered last weekend, 20% discount at Castleford Xscape adds another tick to the 'for' list. Also, still not a patch on SnowHeads.

A thread on black skiers? Very SCGB!

Today's bit of useless information (and seeing that this is a thread about women's skiing)... there's a black lady from Martinique who lives in Les Arcs, Clarisse Jasmin, who is the holder of the current world speed record on standard production skis - 187.21 kph (116.33 mph)

Cathy Coins, Hard to say without reading the thread itself, but an entire thread about black skiers could be a touch 'patronising'. The colour of your skin doesn't have a whole lot to do with how well or why someone skis. As is the case with Clarisse, she lives in Les Arcs and has done so for many years, her origins are entirely incidental to her achievement (on the Les Arcs Flying K piste).

Now a discussion about a hypothetical excellent skier who lived in the Seychelles all year round would be quite understandable. But then we wouldn't necessarily know whether his/her skin was black or white, would we?

PG, well, it didn't start out as a thread on black skiers but developed as one, as they do Wink It actually was pretty interesting, quite heated at times, discussing why there aren't more black skiers on the slopes with two members who are black putting their views across. As M. Coins is black I too could put my penn'orth in Very Happy

However, this thread has since come in for a bit of censorship from Laura, both from some remarks which I guess could have been inflammatory and for some remarks made about an ex-England Rugby Captain due to attend an evening at the SCGB....

Sorry, this has gone seriously off-topic - back to easiski....

 You know it makes sense.

T Bar, the area of a ski domain is easily recognised and most of the French ski areas are huge when all the off-piste is calculated. For example, in the Espace San Bernardo we have 3,000 hectares of skiable domain, 30,000 acres. Compare that to most US skis areas and they would fit in a corner. Translate that to pistes and we have 150 kms. I have no problem accepting that LDA has enormous off-piste capability, just about every French resort has, but some are better known than others.

David@traxvax,

I don't doubt that LDA has a lot of off piste either, though I don't know the resort well. In fact I suggested this on a different thread a few weeks ago and was rebutted.

I am just not so sure how easy it is to recognise the extent of a domain particularly the off piste. For instance the top lifts of LDA and La Grave come close at the Dome de La Loze how on the Girose glacier do they determine if you are in LDA or La Grave domain? There is nothing on a map to indicate which domain you are in.

The only scale maps I have with different areas are the rather rough ones of the old Good Skiing Guides in these it looks as if the total area for LDA is smaller than several other French resorts. I was curious how this is calculated, whether there is any precision for what is probably essentially a marketing ploy.

T Bar, It's quite simple, when you get to the summit of the Dome de la Lauze you go one way to LDA and the other to La Grave. The glacier in between in unskiable due to massive crevasses.

I haven't measured it myself, but the person who told me about this is the best freeride surfer in France (third in the world) so has freeridden all over the place including south america and so on. His brother is a trainer for ENSA and his sister is very high in world cup freestyle competition. I therefore believe what he says because I figured he would know! Smile

Accessible from LDA are all the routes to St Christophe/La Berarde, the whole Fée/Chalance/Gours area, routes down to Cuculet(very dangerous), apart from the obviously visible descents and on the other side you can ski over the back of the Pied Moutet by many routes to various villages. There are a lot of routes to Bons & Mont de Lans when the snow is low, and you can also ski to Venosc if you're very mad/brave! Laughing

sorry, rather off topic

I've just heard that LDA Tourist Office are going to have a dedicated womens week this year. Too late now, but if it works I shall propose a womens' week ski course in that week next year. (This year it's in late Jan I think).

The French are always so slow at organising things - bah!!! Confused

Can't believe I haven't spotted this discussion until now!

Back to your original questions easiski I'd certainly be interested in women only courses....it'd have to be family based (Mr HH would never forgive me if I went skiing without him!) - how about parallel courses? Couples come on holiday and split men/women for the instruction part? As for standard, I'd love to get to grips with off piste without the macho crowd around laughing at me when I land head first in snow! snowHead

homphomp, I'm definitely planning it for next year. I think it's a good idea to get a bloke in to teach the poor dears left hanging around. I can think of several pretty good ladies who would like to join and off piste is something I like to do with everyone if possible. As you say no ya boo hissing!

At this (very early) stage I'm thinking of late Jan, but if the Tourist Office ladies special week is good, then I'll go with that week. It wouldn't stop men coming to town, but might be extra fun for us girls. wink

easiski,
No you haven't run out of female snowheads - I didn't find this forum until recently, and anyway I was skiing when you first posted this topic!
I ski mainly at Squaw Valley USA, which has an excellent ski school, and offers women only clinics/workshops. Their site is www.squaw.com and the info is under "on the mountain", then "ski school" - advanced workshops (I think). I know that since they are a huge corporation that they have a different objective than you do, but I thought you might be interested anyway. I would be taking advantage of them this season, but I can't get the time off work. Currently I ski with a friend and her husband, who I met originally in a lesson - she was better than me, but now I'm better than her! I'm having the problem that she won't venture off piste, and she won't go to play in the bumps (her husband doesn't ski as much and I always find I have to look out for him because she has a tendancy to overestimate his ability and confidence). Needless to say, I'm looking for someone else to ski with. They did try to get me to attend a clinic with them next week, but I'm working, and I think it's better to go when they are not around since we'd be split up anyway, and there is, for me, a difference in when it's time to learn, and when it's time to socialise. I like to do lots of skiing, with a little socialising, during the day, and lots of socialising, with a little bit of skiing, at night (yes that does make sense - night skiing starts Dec 18th).

Unfortunately, I don't think I can make it to Europe this year, but I think an all female clinic would be a great place to introduce me to skiing in Europe - maybe in 2005/2006? (I know things are a little different over there Smile )

pollittcl, Thanks for the info, what a huge and varied site!

When you do come to Europe the thing that will amaze is the vertical drop. There aren't that many resorts in the States with a vertical drop of more than 1500 ft (less than half when I applied to work there many moons ago). Here in LDA we have 2270 metres Very Happy Of course it's not always all open but when it is.......... the other thing you'll find is the very relaxed attitude to off piste ski-ing - you can ski anywhere you like. If you get hurt it's your fault. I think we all hope the lawyers don't find their way here!

Seriously 2005/06 is definitely on the cards for a ladies week, and what could be more fun than meeting other snowheads?

Have fun and stick with your moguls and off piste. snowHead
