Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Glacial meltdown continues

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
A summary of a couple of articles in today's French press....

A spokesperson for the Chambéry regional environmental authority has confirmed that a high mountain lake in the Vanoise (Savoie) range, threatening to overflow due to an increase in meltwater from the glacier that feeds it, is being closely monitored.

The level of the Rochemelon lake in the region of Bessans is dangerously high, following a rapid acceleration in the melting of the glaciers following particularly warm temperatures, not only during the summer, but also through the month of September. The natural ice and moraine barrier is being reinforced artificially with sand bags and jute to prevent the glacial lock being pierced. No threat to Bessans itself, but this news provides yet another indication of the ever-shortening life expectancy of the European glaciers.

The French minister of Ecology and Sustainable Development, Serge Lepeltier is to pay a visit to the Bossons glacier near Chamonix in the Mont Blanc massif, where he will meet scientists from the CNRS glaciology laboratory to discuss the issues of glacial retreat and climate warming.

More on the retreat of the Bossons glacier here. It's been retreating since 1816, but much quicker as time has gone on (though the stats given aren't bang up-to-date). Interestingly, the glacier advanced a bit in 81 and 82 (St Helens?) and the subsequent retreat slowed in the early 90s (Pinatubo?).

It's probably dangerous to infer too much from this single measure though: perhaps the diminution in overall mass would show less variation.

And in New Zealand galciers are growing.
Perhaps- to ski - we are all going to have to take long-distance flights.
