Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Did you know????

  • More people in the UK ski than play tennis.
  • There are about 2.5 million British skiers. (If only they'd all donate 50p each!)
  • Nearly half of all skiers are women.
  • Skiing is part of the national curriculum.
  • An estimated 25 million people watched the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympic Games on the BBC, a total of 142,891,667 hours of winter sports viewing between them.
  • More TV viewers watch skiing every Sunday than either European tour golf or national rugby union.
  • There are over 800,000 skier holidays each year.
  • Skiing is international, modern, powerful, exciting, natural, fun, clean, active and healthy.
All good reasons for individuals, companies and governments to get involved!!!!!

Please help to support our rising and established stars.

If you would like to sponsor a young ski racer, contact Jenny via www.gbjuniorski.com where there is information about what both companies and individuals can do to help, or send me a PM...

PG,

I am interested to know how skiing is incorporated into the National Curriculum (NC) ? We're fortunate that my daughter's secondary school still runs skiing trips. The school has a well motivated PE teacher who takes a party out to Mont Tremblant every 2 years. Is there any connection between skiing trips and the NC?

My daughter's going in Easter 2005, and I am trying to impress on her how fortunate she is to have previous skiing experience (ESI silver crystal), whilst most of her schoolmates will be complete novices - does a lot for the self confidence of a 12 year old.

Unfortunately, going back to PG's point about skiing participants, it is pricey and obviously many school kids are excluded from this sport on economic grounds. Out of curiosity, is skiing in France, Austria etc. widely accesibles for school children resident in and around skiing regions, (part of organised PE) or is it still the domain of the well-to-do?

Hywel, I rely on the (sketchy) information provided by Snowsport GB to the effect that skiing is a recognised curriculum sport. I'll see if I can find out some details.

Yes, in the Alpine nations, skiing is accessible to all those who live within easy reach of the ski areas. Not only schools and clubs, but the local authorities themselves provide highly subsidised tuition to less well off kids. In France the system even provides for the 'classe de neige', a week's trip in term time for primary school children, wherever they live in the country. Due to budgetary constraints, this is not as widely available as it once was, but it's still going strong.

It's true, in the sense that skiing is a recognised specialist subject area for GCSE. My daughter's skiing was videoed 3 years ago and submitted to the school as an element in her GCSE PE coursework.

But how will school skiing trips fair now with the new laws about school trips where they can't just have teachers to supervise the kids they need an instructer per so many children now hence making it too expensive for many and also alot of schools are now so terified of claims against them they hardly run any school trips certainly not ones that are so prone to injury like skiing etc. My first experience of skiing was with school it got me hooked and the only way alot of kids will get into the sport unless thier parents are or as with me they do it in the forces. Plus as is the opinion of many kids today exercise is changing games in thier playstation when i was at school there was always 1 or 2 (for want of a better word) fat lazy kids now it seems the majority are over wieght and lazy.

bootneck, it's not just the schools that are terrified, the instructors are as well, even thogh they may be in a different country they have top comply with UK regulations when it comes to schools/scouts and other similar organisations, for many this is just not viable on the off chance that one or two UK groups might wish to use their facilities, not to mention the reems of paperwork that they have to fill in Sad

PG, .........you what? Sorry, but i think that is a load of tosh!

To me it's a holiday, I fund the sport in that way. If the governement/Lottery choose not to fund it enough then that is fine with me snowHead

rolling eyes Any fact in particular Dan, or the idea of supporting young British hopefuls? The whole package, perhaps? Come on, spit it out.

PG, sorry i did answer but some reason only part of it got posted, now go to remember what i wrote............can't find any figures but...........as i said it's what i think Blush

More sliders than tennis players, sorry can't believe that. Especially when you take into account the time spent playing rather than just say 1 individual sliding for 5 days. once a year.

More people watch Ski Sunday than national rugby union Puzzled Well national rugby is only on Sky so i can't watch it as i refuse to pay £50 a month Crying or Very sad I personally go and watch it live in the stands (Leicester Tigers) when i can, but the times it on is (- mostly Saturdays) is when i am out playing hockey, cricket, tennis or doing something else than watching TV Wink Ski Sunday has only a very minor, very loyal, following and it's on when nothing else is on NehNeh . Lot's of people from this board may watch it, but i bet its got similar viewing figures to the old Rugby Special when that was on on Sundays Puzzled

Sorry I don't believe the reasons given are any reason to support young sliders. I think most sliders in the UK don't view it as a "sport" as such, i mean competetive i guess, they view it as a holiday/leisure activity.

ok, with your edit above Dan, I see where you're coming from. Just so long as you're not in the ranks of those who complain when the Brits come off second-best in sporting events! Laughing Even with the lottery funding investment in many 'minor' sports is well below that in plenty of other countries. Other than the big sporting names, budding stars have no choice but to go round looking for company sponsorship deals on an individual level, and sports clubs and associations have to do the same....

As for the figures, query them with Snowsport GB, they provided them! Other than the Olympic viewing figures which I traced from an independent source.

The number of skiers is as important for potential sponsors as time spent skiing. If you're going to give significant funding to a sport it has to be popular, both in terms of the numbers taking part and who follow it via the media.

So the figures are aimed at business sponsors, not individuals. Individuals cough up because they like the idea of Brits winning things. If they don't give a damn, that's their prerogative!

PG, The figures sound much like the Ski Club of Great Britain one's that were discussed on one of the other threads Wink Toofy Grin

I've not got a problem with anyone coming second...........third...........fourth............even last in any event/sport. Just as long as they try their best. I watch (and play) to sport to see a good game, people may find my attitude strange and ok i do prefer to see my team/nation win, but I go to watch the sport not the actual individual/team performing. I don't give 2 hoots if the sprinter, slider, rugby player etc is Tongon, Australian, English etc.........I don't see that as important as the spectical itself.

For example i'm planning on going to the next rugby world cup in France, not bothered who wins, i plan to watch whoever qualifies be it Japan, USA, Canada, England, Wales..........or even Andorra Wink if they play like i saw on Transworld Sport (C4, Saturday mornings).

Probably going to dig myself a hole here rolling eyes but I would like the lottery/taxes to support Dry Slope sliding in the UK though as i think that is possibly a viable British sport, if through this individuals manage to secure sponsorship etc to go to the snow then good on them and wish them the best of luck!!! snowHead
