Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Grimentz knee and scans

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I just got back from a week (off piste) in Grimentz. It looked dire when I arrived but there was a surprising amount of (thin) untouched powder on a crunchy base if you had a guide to find it. Rocks too, of course.

On the third day of the holiday we skied off the back to another village off-piste. We had got to the other resort and I was doing big, fast carved turns behind the guide down the smooth, empty pistes, the others strung out behind, heading down for lunch. Then suddenly an out of control idiot (the only person on the slope not from our group) tried to go past me and hit my shoulder - knocking me onto my inside (right) leg and spinning me around 90º: ski came off but not easily enough (new skis, perhaps bindings set a bit too high?).. end over end...very long slide etc. I am told the guy did stop when he could, a couple of hundred yards on. I took quite a while to get up because of the pain in my knee, but when I did and assembled my gear with help from the others skiing behind me, and finally skied off - it seems the idiot skied away too.
I skied down with only minimal pain (well, you hardly need knees for smooth piste). I thought I had got away with it. But walking was more painful.
That night and the next day it hurt so I rested it a day and tried the day after (though it still twinged occasionally going up stairs). Unfortunately it was an off-piste run first thing and I was yelping at every right turn and had to stop.
Doctor said it was my lateral ligament: I had 3-4mm instability in the joint and possible meniscus damage. He said I had "bonne musculation" and would mend well. But I had a holiday booked in 3 weeks at St Anton!!! I had organised a guide, rooms, flights etc for 5 friends. Could I go? He said he didn't know: I would need an MRI scan to find out.

(Later some snow fell but it was too late for me.)

So folks, I'm off to the doctor tomorrow but I can't see I'll get a quick scan on the National Health and I gather they are rather expensive. Suppose I'll just have to wait and see nearer the time, or should I pay to go to a sports injury specialist? Would that be expensive?

snowball, Sorry to hear about your knee. Its worth getting it properly checked out asap & start on rehab exercises once the acute problem has settled.

That's bad luck Sad It's unfortunate when your own error causes an injury, but when it's the result of some idiot who crashes into you it's just maddening. Hope you have a quick recovery.

snowball, oh what bad luck---and a very similar scenario to mine last week--(strange!)
I am seeing the GP tomorrow too, my son insists I get checked out--as in Spain they only took an Xray and told me I had no broken ribs.

You knee injury sounds like it should get thorough investigation and LOTS of rest!
Hopefully you'll be fine for St. Anton Little Angel

Can I suggest.. dont go to your doctor, go straight to A&E, this should put you in the system earlier. It's highly unlikely your Dr will be able to do anything other than make a referral. That may incur a delay.

I've had 2 knee injuries. First went to Dr, they refered me to a specialist, that took 2 months! This year, on the other knee, I went to A&E on my return, saw specialist next day, now waiting for confirmed operation date!

It may just be the way the system works here. But as at this time I'm 3 months ahead in the process! It seems that in MCR you need to know how to play the 'system', BTW I cannot afford private treatment, if I could I'd have had the op by now!

Good luck!

snowball, bad luck - brings home the importance of the downhill skier having the right of way whether or not carving across the hill. Dunno if your GP would organise a scan himself, some do, but a private scan whilst not cheap isn't totally beyond reach to many people at £200-300. However it does seem to me that you'd benefit from a specialist orthopaedic opinion.

snowball, excellent advice from your mates BMF_Skier, and slikedges, for your knee injury--get a scan done ASAP-- it may be worth going private. I do wish you a rapid recovery.

Educational reading this thread for me too.
(I am seeing my GP today for a possible referral --I find it puzzling why I am in a lot of pain at certain times of the day and not so much other times. It's a week today that I got crashed into. Never had such an injury before---so don't know what's "normal" trauma pain...)

Hullo everyone, I have been avoiding coming on here so far this season as last november coming off the train, slipped, felt a pop around the knee area but the pain wasnt as bad as some pains I have had.

Went to A&E after a couple of days, by which time I could no longer walk on the leg, the doctor in A&E force me to bend it, I found that possibly the most painfull thing I have felt. Got booked into see a orthapeadic specialist, and later that hour his boss. By this time the overall swelling was about 8cm out from normal.

Turns out the worst damage was to the lateral, I had also stretched my cruciate and my knee had impacted, apparently I had fractured my knee in the past and never noticed....

So now after 3 months of physio, and ultra sonic tratment my knee feels fine but the muscles around it dont feel that tough, got the all clear from the orthapeadic specialist and the physio that I should be ok to go skiing next month, if I wear a knee brace, the one I was recommended was the mueller hg80, kevlar with aluminium frame.

The physio I used gave me balance board exercises, I got the Kettler one from http://www.sport-tiedje.com/kleingeraete.htm#balancetraining it comes witha guide with 15 exercises.

I was also given instruction that I should do at least 1 hour walking per day. 2 weeks to go ..............at last.

All the best with your ailment and I hope it all works out well for you.

 snowHeads are a friendly bunch.
snowHeads are a friendly bunch.
A&E will depend on Dr and Hospital I guess, and severity.

Completely detached my ACL and the A&E Dr said there was nothing wrong.
2 weeks later still in discomfort went to GP. Got referral for specialist.
Xray, and MRI showed ACL damage and meniscal tear.

Had keyhole to clean up meniscal damage and frayed ends of ACL.
Now toying with the idea of a rebuild, ski'd on it twice, been ok. Of to Soll in March, hope it stays ok for the week :}

When I was there at Xmas, the rocks were the crunchy base !

Sorry to hear about your knee. Sad

While I wouldn't like to see skiing go down a litigious track, I do wonder if in such a case the "hit and run" skier should be held accountable. You should be getting scans etc on their insurance I'd have thought.

brian, Interesting thought! I wonder how the insurance companies would take that idea. Would you have 'knock for knock' situations as you can do with cars. Also, some insurance companies are tricky about paying up for the insureds injuy, i can imagine them getting very picky about paying up for a third party.

snowball, I believe that this MRI unit in Cheltenham is possibly the cheapest in the UK (£198). The referral process is explained here along with a referral form which you could print off and partly fill in for your GP http://www.cobaltappeal.com/mrip_referralprocess.htm
They say that a report should be with the GP within 1 week.

Sorry to hear about your injury.

I've just seen this...I'm sorry to hear about your knee...I hope you'll be able to ski in St Anton (where I thought you were, in case you received my text message).

(last weekend in St Anton I had two skiers nearly run into me. One of them stopped and tsk tsk tsk-ed at me. I assume he didn't like the fact that I decided to stop using a wide carve to the left after a series of short turns...)

Thanks for the advice and sympathy, everyone. To top it all I then went down with the flu, which is why I have not been on here since.
With all the various delays in seeing my doctor, finding out the waiting list for scans at the hospital and finally getting a referal to a sports specialist, I shall finally get to see him on Tuesday. Doesn't seem as though I shall know in time to get a replacement person for my place in the holiday if I can't go. Annoying since that will put up the price of the guide for the others.

snowball, if you can't go, I have a friend who may be able to take your place. Standard about the same or near to mine (but, as opposed to me, he does those strange things called turns).

Can you e-mail me the details so I can pass them on just in case?

The specialist has said I can ski !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He reckons that the instability in my joint dates back to my ACL injury about 15 years ago. (I probably have only part of my ACL.)

Thanks, Cedric, but no thanks. (Hurahh)

Cedric, Yes, we arrive about 2pm Friday 2nd and ski sat/sun on our own (but for those days including another skier who is not so good but seems to get down most things). Then Mon -Sat with guide - all much like Verbier. We must get together (I still have your mobile number in my phone).

Well myself and two friends will arrive about 2pm on Fri 2nd and stay until Sun night.

Perhaps we can ski for a while together on Sat/Sun? That should be fun. I know one of my two friends will be able to keep up, not sure about the other as we haven't skied together, but he may well be good.

I have your mobile as well, I'll give you a call Fri afternoon. (are you coming on the Fri morning Ryanair flight to Friedrichshafen? If so, we'll see each other in the airport or on the flight).

No, Salzburg by Ryanair.
As I said, we will have one less-good skier Sat/Sun (he will ski with another guide later) so it doesn't matter if your other person isn't so good (but assuming he can ski off-piste). Me, John K, Stuart and Roger E you know. the other 3 you don't.
