Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Happy 70th birthday Chris Bonington!

A week late, but.....
Britain's most famous mountaineer Sir Chris Bonington (who also lists skiing as a pursuit) turned 70 on 6 August.

The longevity and achievements of Bonington's career - which is still going very strong - surely outclass any other mountain sportsman in this country. Many of the world's greatest peaks - including the Mont Blanc, Everest, Eiger, Annapurna - have seen his pioneering work. His books, film-making and leadership work have led to a recent career in motivational speaking, where he is using advanced audio-visual techniques.

Read more about this fascinating man's life in this biography from the West Cumberland Times and Star...and his own website.

...and I'm chuffed to say that he went to my old school in Hampstead!

Yes, belated happy returns Sir Chris. He may have conquered all those peaks but has he survived a week in Sauze D'Oulx? Now that would be an achievement!

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I remember a good few many years ago, when I was in the scouts, that Chris Bonington came to our hut to give a talk on mountaineering. Needless to say, he wasn't as nearly as famous then Smile I do recall being fairly inspired - even if it was just to go climbing at High Rocks near Tunbridge Wells ! rolling eyes

His autobiography mentions a bit of skiing in Wengen while there as a journo covering Dougal Haston's direct route on the Eiger.

Amazing career he's had, in fact pretty amazing he's still alive when you look at others who've attempted so many of the big Himalayan 8000ers !
