Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Scary climate warnings from the Government's chief adviser

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Climate change gets a regular 'airing' here, for good reason. It would be nice for our kids and grandkids to have something to ski on in 50 years time. The interesting thing is that the UK Government's chief scientific adviser, Sir David King, makes more worrying predictions than anyone else.

He is now warning of the destruction of London and New York (this report from today's Guardian) by flooding, and insisting on greater European leadership to combat global warming.

But is the Government going to drop its plans for substantial airport expansion? The chips are well and truly down if The People are to get a clear message on this.

The latest US solution to global warming.....

Sue the polluters!!!

Who knows, it may work. Litigation is the one thing that never fails to grab people's attention over there....

Typical - sue Power Utilities who are actually very efficient electricity producers while the lawyers are driving around in huge gas-guzzling autos with lumps of ineffecient Detroit pig-iron under the bonnets. From the article some sense ...
Quote:
"A lawsuit is not a constructive way to deal with climate change. There is nothing one company, five companies, or one country can do to resolve global warming. It will require a global commitment including developing nations."

Unless USA signs up to the Kyoto Protocol, Sir David King's efforts are likely to be in vain. The figures quoted in DG's link are really scary.

"The language in the dossier may have left with readers the impression that there was fuller and firmer intelligence behind the judgments than was the case: our view . . . is that judgments in the dossier went to (although not beyond) the outer limits of the intelligence available"

Butler report, July 2004

David King's reported outburst wouldn't be the first time a government adviser applied a gloss to the available evidence to fit a pre-conceived political view. King makes much of the deaths in last summer's European heatwave, without mentioning (at least, as reported in the Guardian and BBC articles) the much greater number of seasonal deaths that occur every European winter. Another example is the use of "when" (without giving a time-frame: 45 minutes perhaps?) rather than "if" in relation to the total melting of the Greenland and Antarctic ice-caps.

As the government has found over Iraq, one-sided presentations arouse suspicion. It will find it hard now to convince the public of a future real security threat. I fear the same effect in relation to environmental matters - particularly in the middle of the coolest summer in years.

That's why it's called "climate change", not global warming. Anyway, there's some doubt as to that's really what David King said, I heard somewhere.

I’m more inclined to think that we’ll see more extremes of weather, including high snowfalls. But in the meantime, economies will be struggling to cope (I won’t be investing in insurance companies) and the weather patterns will be moving snowfalls to non-ski ready locations – so we’ll still be screwed. I don’t think many of the big established ski resorts will fare well, but there will be some in odd places that will benefit.
We live in ‘interesting’ times.

Has anyone else been watching BBC News24's series on climate change this week? One of today's reports was from Graham Bell talking about the effect of climate change on the Scottish ski resorts. He had a brief interview with Alain Baxter and his grandfather comparing snow conditions when they learnt to ski in Scotland and now.One interesting comment was that years ago, they occasionally managed to ski all year round up there!
