The Pope, a former skier and mountaineer in his native Poland, is taking a break in a tiny hamlet (population 5 in winter, 25 in summer) called Les Combes near Chamonix.
According to this report from Reuters it's in Italy rather than France. Anyone know it?

Seems to be in the Aosta valley, and a favourite papal spot by the look of it. I suppose it all depends what you mean by "near"

You're right, Alan. It seems to be about 40 miles from Chamonix. When I read "view of Mont Blanc" and "near the French border" I forgot how distant you can be be to get the view!

It seems that the Pope's Alpine retreat is as rainy as the UK at the moment, according to this report from Zenit.
What does a Pope do on a rainy day? Pray for sun? Pray for snow? Sit in his chalet playing Italian Scrabble?

The Pope has an athletic background,
Quote: |
FACTOID
John Paul II is possibly the most athletic Pope in history. In his youth, he played soccer as a goal-keeper, took daring swims in the flooded Skawa River, and enjoyed skiing, hiking, mountain climbing and kayaking |

Mark Hunter His Eminence is the title reserved to a Cardinal, the right
title for a Pope is either Pontiff (derived from the Latin Pontifex Maximus, see http://sights.seindal.dk/sight/1244_Pontifex_maximus.html ) or His Sainthood.
Sorry for being picky...feel free to me.
Ciao
P.S. I am competing with nbt for the worst typist championship's title.

Thanks, Matteo. I think that's interesting rather than picky.
Here's the latest on the Pope's rainy holiday: again from Zenit.
If he's going around the mountains in the Popemobile he should be keeping dry.
Apparently this vehicle, used by US scientists in the Antarctic is also known as the 'Popemobile' if His Sainthood is looking for a snow-pope-mobile.

Yep David, He was pretty sporty when younger, I remember the newspaper here running coverages about him and the then President of the Italian Republic Sandro Pertini (also a known mountain lover) walking around in the mountains and takingthe odd ski out.
I also remmeber two things, Pertini was an old guy, having fought during WWI in the Alps, and also a Socialist (and declared atheist).
That last bit did not hindered their friendship.
Mark, ahr ahr, you know how we Papist are, isn't it ?
