Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Was like the Merthyr slope.

Built entirely in the wrong place. Steep as all hell

and a bug to clip together, take apart. Catterick Indoor Ski Centre used Ski Mat before changing to Curver, a similar but far superior injection moulded plastic. We used to use a light engine oil as a lubricant.

I seem to remember both the builder (?) Leatherbarrow and the council architect were jailed sometime later for corruption ?

Worked weekends/holidays at Gloucester; one of my tasks was to carry a barrel of light oil up the poma and refill a number of rollers on the track and at the top of the slope which helped lubricate the skis. Messy work.

Helped weed the slope one summer, unclipping and reclipping the SkiMat sections was, as you say, a real bug*** of a task!

Skitow, mentioned this to my golfing mates whilst playing on Saturday, non of them skiiers and they allremembered this slope. The builder charged the council for the slope whilst still using demolition rubbish he would otherwise have paid to get rid of. He then got the council to pay to topsuface it. And of course he built it the wrong way round. Perfect. For our younger members, this type of thing was helpful to Alan Bleasdale when writing 'boys from the blackstuff'. Prison sentences were indeed involved. snowHead

@twoodwar, There's an echo in here Toofy Grin Yes I was in college in Liverpool 76-80 and one of the other guys on the course, civil engineering as it happens rolling eyes had worked either for or with the local council while all this was going on. Of course, as usual, everybody knew what was going on before it all blew up.....

A tale of council cock-up from start to finish: Ski slope or any other project involving other people's money and 'your mates'.

Love the history lesson on prices 1973, just 45 years ago, - "shock horror: prices rose from 90k to £140k" .

These days we'd only be mildly outraged if a scheme went from £90 to £140 million...
(To be fair I exaggerate a little: our local paper is challenging car park plans in our borough that have risen from £8m to £33m. Incompetence and lack of due process continues to this day).
