Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Les Gets with the kids

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Heading to Les Gets for Xmas with the kids aged 6,7 & 9yrs. They have all been on 4 ski holidays and are competent on blues, although the younger ones can get a bit tired in the afternoons. They will probably have a few days ski school and a few days with us. Is it worth getting full PDS lift passes for them or can you pay daily to add PDS if you venture over for a couple of days? Any tips on the resort are welcome, we already have a chalet booked though.

Les Gets is fantastic for families. Make sure you book to go to santas grotto. The ice rink is lovely at christmas and there are fireworks on xmas eve. It is a great time of year to be in les gets.

In 4 years of running chalets in les gets, only twice did any of the families staying buy their kids pds passes and many weeks we had kids who were very good skiers. There is plenty enough in les gets morzine and les gets is right on the edge of pds so takes a while to get to avoriaz even. If the young ones get a bit tired and they are all blue run skiers buying pds passes is not worth it. There is no add on option though so if you really do want to go beyond les gets morzine you may as well get a full pds pass for the week.

The only caveat to my advice not to get pds passes is that if snow is poor you will need them as only the very beginner runs have managed to open at christmas in les gets in poor snow years. The discounts currently available are the same until 12 december so buy passes early december once you have a better idea of snow.

Hi,
I second julietp comments. Les gets is great for families, and unless the snow is bad you can easily get away extending your passes on the days you intend to make a long day of it ie they are not a ski school. However it is dependent on snow conditions. We are heading to avoriaz at Christmas (usually go to Les gets end of January) as we were worried we would have a long track to Avoriaz if there was not much snow. But our daughter is less experienced and skiing takes it out of her and I was worries it would have been too much for her tracking that far every day (there was a risk of whining!).
I much prefer the skiing on the Lets Gets/Morzine side, you will have a ball!

@pablito69, as has been said, excellent choice for family holiday.
I like Mont Chery. Tends to be quieter than other mountains. Good place to start the week maybe?
The ski pass issue is tricky. If snow conditions good, Les Gets and Morzine should have all you need.
If snow is limited, then lowish altitude in that sector may mean you need to go further and higher to get decent snow.

Personally, unless early buy discounts are really big, I would wait and buy passes on first morning in resort. You’ll know the conditions and weather forecast by then.

@BoardieK, is it possible to buy a day pass just for Mt Chery?

The OP can benefit from a 10% discount for families, if passes bought all at the same time.

The forfait famille works on the les gets site when you input the ages- which site are you using? I know chatel site had problems.

You can buy a day pass for mont chery only for 20 euros- on occasion 10 euros.

Les Gets / Morzine pass prices here including the day pass price for Mont Chery but this is only worthwhile if you're buying passes daily and only want to ski Mont Chery only on that day.

Mont Chery tends to be one of the quietest parts of the PDS and is superb but can really suffer in times of poor snow.

@pablito69,
It used to be possible, although I don't if it still is, to get a daily extension/upgrade of the LG/M pass to a PDS pass although the cost used to such that the cost of 2 days extension added the LG/M weekly pass came to more than the PDS weekly pass.

Should you not want to ski to Morzine to access Avoriaz or have your own or the chalet's transport available there is a very cheap regular bus service from Les Gets to Morzine.

Just to confuse matters we now have the potential for 11 days on the slopes.. I'm thinking that we are nearly in
"buy a PDS season pass at 870 euros and get the kids pass free" territory... ??
Especially as I could potentially head back in Feb for a 4 day lads trip...
However if the kids are only in ski school for 3hrs I'm guessing we are still pushing it to even stray into the PDS area before having to head back into Les Gets to collect them...
Family discount, early purchase discount, buy one get one free;
too many choices.. especially when we are likely to arrive on the 19th Dec and don't even know which areas will be open by then!

@pablito69, Mt Cherry is Brilliant and normally quieter but mostly Steeper..... Generally Reds on the front side, with 1 x blue and Blacks on the back side (Cherry Nord).

Les Gets/Morzine pass should be more than sufficient for the kids (as long as the early season snow is OK).

You are pushing it to try and get from Les Gets, through Morzine and up to Avoriaz and back in 3 hrs.

Thanks. Sorted we are waiting until we get there, multi-day LGS pass with family discount. Maybe a day or 2 at St Jean D'Aulps if it is open early enough
