Marcel Hirscher’s preparations for the upcoming season were hindered Thursday after the six-time overall World Cup champion broke his left ankle in practice during his first day back on skis.
The 28-year-old Austrian will be in a cast for six weeks, and there was no immediate prognosis when he will be able to ski again. The new season, which includes the Olympics, starts Oct. 29 with a giant slalom in Soelden, Austria.
Hirscher straddled a gate at the Moelltaler glacier at the end of a slalom run. He was flown by helicopter to a hospital in Salzburg but the Austrian ski federation said he does not need surgery.

Dunno about that, ankle injury is a killer esp with all the tendons if they get messed up.
Fingers crossed he makes it

It always amazes me how quickly pro athletes recover from injuries. With no complications he'll be back and racing by Levi. Could easily be longer if there are problems though.

Yeah he'll get top quality care and physio, plus will be able to concentrate 100% on it so has a better chance than most. Plus he's Marcel Hirscher, so is a little bit superhuman anyway.

Suspect it might be a good thing in an Olympic year - bit of an enforced layoff will mean he's fresher by the time the games roll aaround (if indeed they do with threat of N Korean missiles aimed at them)

Good for him. Good to know he's a skier at heart and probably not bad if he wants to work on a showreel for a bit of post racing ski-porn a la Rahlves etc. Can't imagine Schiffrin blowing off for a couple of weeks heli - would interfere with "the programme" too much

@Dave of the Marmottes, yeah, it's good to see Aksel doing big mountain skiing in the Field Productions films (Being There, Supervention etc.). He clearly loves it but his style still has something of the racer about it, even on pow-covered Alaskan spines

@DB, most of those big mountain skiers started out as racers - McConkey, Auclair, Seth Morrison, Ingrid Backstrom etc
On a side note I’d love to see Mancuso do some more freeride comps if she ever gets her hip issues sorted

@DB, McConkey was Bourke Mountain academy but he got dropped from the US team and ended up in moguls. Mancuso had her first hip replacement recently so will be interesting to see what she does when she’s back to health
