Andermatt touring

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi,

My partner and I are thinking about a May bank holiday weekend trip as a last hurrah for the season. There are obvious destination candidates like VT but we would be keen to avoid a very long transfer for what's only a long-weekend trip. As a result we are considering Andermatt, but the last lift opening day is the Sunday of that weekend.

We are both reasonably competent off piste skiers (I am far from brilliant but can survive). We have done a bit of ski touring (fairly basic stuff) with guides over the last couple of years and (armed with some mountain guide advice and heading only into seriously low avi risk areas) started trying out some short tours by ourselves this season.

As a result of this we are considering having Monday as a non-lift touring day and wondered - would anyone have any recommendations for a basic/low risk touring route (less than a day), in the Andermatt area?

Failing that, any recommendations for pleasant, gentle mountain guides in that area would also be much appreciated.

NB - we have looked over the Swiss Topo maps for Andermatt but nothing has jumped out at us so far - may be inexperience using them though.

Any help much appreciated.

Train to Oberalppass (there is a lighthouse) then skin gently up the valley for a night in Maigels hut.
Lazy start in the morning to allow the re-freeze to soften then cruise back to the rly.
Super safe, lovely terrain, very atmospheric......Enjoy!

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Plenty of tours from Andermatt.
Train to Oberalpass, then skin up to Paxolastock then long decent into Andermatt is a good one.
Check out

the official Swiss mapping

Here you can see all the touring routes including plenty of additional info such as slope angles and maps can be printed to correct scales (e.g. 1:25K).

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Thank you both. The Oberalpass option is a great idea. Love the look of the Maighels hut - looks as if it is not serviced that weekend but we can still stay there and it'd be a good adventure to end the season.

Thanks once again!

Massive thanks to @Rogerdodger for the perfect recommendation - that was exactly what we were looking for, gentle/safe enough not to be scary but still felt like an adventure! Brief trip report to follow (once I figure out image posting from Google Photos)...

Setting off to ski back down the valley:

Really fun end to our first season attempting to tour - looking forward to venturing further next year. Thanks again for the suggestions.

The next one in the same area (opposite direction out of Andermatt) is to look at the Rotondo hut.
Train to Realp then a long gentle skin up Witenwasseren with a steeper final 2km to the hut. The hut is beautiful, refurbed in the last 10 years, it stands in a stunning location. The Leckihorn, Witenwasserenstock tower above to name just a couple.
The route in has a series of "scaffolding poles" with large plates indicating distances to the next pole, perhaps it gets very foggy!

Lovely photos, @schauspiele, thanks for sharing.

Rotondo hut is fab, so +1 @Rogerdodger. Loads of good days to be had from there. We’ve been grateful to those poles and markers in a near-whiteout once 😱

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

I was there earlier in the season. The lighthouse signifies the lai da tuma which is supposed to be he soue of the northern Rhine

Does anyone have any advice about affordable accommodation in Andermatt? Looking to do a week next March perhaps.
