Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Pic du midi

Off to Grand Tourmalet for a long weekend. Is the Pic du midi on the ski pass or is a supplement/ separate pass? It sounds as though one aspect is a straight forward decent and the other side is more extreme. Are there guides who put together groups? My mate will have to hire a pack ,shovel and probe, can anyone recommend a place. Any other route we ought to try? Also looking for advise where to go with trees in bad weather- we have a car.

Did you try googling for : Bareges Off Piste ?

there is some information although I'm sure the locals can answer specific questions like shops

You can buy a Grand Tourmalet pass which includes one lift up the cable cars to the Pic du Midi. Or you can buy a pass called the Pic Unlimited which allows you to ride the cable cars as many times as you want.

The classic decent is fairly straightforward, depending on snow conditions. Other routes can require mountaineering skills. I can highly recommend Jean-Denis http://jeandenis.prisse.free.fr/hiver.php for a day on the Pic or other off piste routes in the area.

Pas de la Crabe is another popular route. The climb up through the crack in the rocks is definitely one to take your camera for.

As for tree skiing at the Barèges end of the area there are 2 drag lifts that you can loop and ski the trees either side.

I skied it iwth Claude Etchelecou and can highly recommend. Good English, good guy. Was among the group of guides who first organised descents from the Pic - http://www.horspistes.fr/
