Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

I thought I was good - then alex pressed 'burst' on his iphone

Poster: A snowHead
Ok....the scene. Low viz at Vercorin on Saturday. Excellent snow. Zero skiers. Heart no longer racing from the stress of the rockfall on the road up to the village. Alex (12) and I are setting really tight carved turns on steep piste.

I have had an excellent week. A lot of focus on technique - really working hard, and both condition and technique increasing. Some big smiles after icy steeps done with aplomb (whatever a plomb is). But when you have skied steep boiler plate with a deceptive dusting of fresh, putting in edges and carving short turns, not skidding tails or going sideways, then there's justification in an inward smile.

So I am skiing well. Ego intact if not slightly swelling.

So I need some photos for an article - Alex skis down three poles on a steep section and gets his camera out, waves his hand for 'go' and I ski down, trying to reproduce what I think has been my best.

It's pants. Not a single usable photo. First run down I am doing a weird head bob and looking down at my ski tips. Second run I am A framing. Third run I am leaning into the hill for some stupid reason. I felt secure on all the turns, edging securely, but have some weird habits. And the 'burst' photos have really shown these up.

And so ... the odd wheezing noise is the sound of my ego deflating. Back to work today ... heavy meeting schedule ...next time out Easter, perhaps one weekend can be squeezed in before....and I need a BIG burst of coaching....

This was a great line.

None of us are quite as good as we think we are Sad

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Does 'burst' signify what it does to your ego then?

It's always the way - I think I'm skiing like a God, then I see video/photos of myself and realise I'm skiing more like a dog, with all the style of a broken sofa rolling eyes Don't be too hard on yourself though!

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I never think I'm skiing like a God - so videos are rarely too deflating. But I recall over 40 years ago feeling very serene whilst very pregnant - like a stately square rigger in full sail. Then seeing a bit of video. OMG. Waddling like a duck in a horribly unflattering "maternity dress" (the kind which never gets worn these days).

@valais2, it would be interesting to see the results if you didn't know you were being photographed.

You mean like some quantum physics effect where the flaws only crystalise at the moment they're being observed?

I have to admit, the whole story sounds very familiar, although probably at a much lower level. Sad

I'm good enough to know I'm not very good at all... I go as far as to say I'm cr4p.

when you know you're being videoed it messes up your brains ability to do even walk in a straight line without looking like you've just learned to walk Laughing Laughing Laughing

Not with a photograph but the same realisation came over me years ago dong a 100km charity walk. I remember towards the end walking up a hill and thinking why on earth is everyone walking so slowly , then I realised I was going at exactly the same speed.

Video never lies! I use video feedback a lot when I'm teaching (and when I'm training) and it's a great tool, but definitely leave your ego at the door (especially if you do video analysis in a group). Once had a client start to cry during a feedback session...

I ski at my worst when I become self conscious. That could be someone pointing a camera at me, or an instructor stood downhill, waiting for me to produce brilliance.
