 Poster: A snowHead

Going to St Anton with family and friends for half term next week. I have had a couple of off piste days with a guide there in the past, but otherwise don't know it at all, after years of 3 valleys and Espace Killy that I know inside out now.
Any advice on where to ski? Are there different areas with different characters? Are there off piste groups to join? Are there safe freeride areas? Any must dos?

If you go to St Anton then you should try the White Ring. No guide needed and pretty easy but do bring cash for a nice lunch in mountain top of Lech.

So much to do in the Arlberg ski area. Everything you find in the 3 valleys, you will find there and a warm welcome from the Austrian locals. Much better infrastructure, modern mostly heated lifts these days. Great food and unmatched apres ski, the best anywhere in the world. Use either Piste To Powder or one of the excellent ski schools for off piste guiding.

I'll see if I can book an off piste day for myself. White ring sounds like a good day out - we have one slowish intermediate with us (can ski blacks but would prefer not to). Feasible for her too, or will she be cursing me?

IIRC there are no blacks in der weiße Ring. None that can't be avoided, at least. There are some reds, but if your "slowish intermediate" is fine with skiing in St. Anton, these should not be an issue at all. (This is skiing clockwise. I memory serves, you can't do der weiße Ring anticlockwise.)

@turbosmurf, Get out early if doing the Weissering, very big queues this year at bottom of Madlochbahn and Zug lifts (slow 2 person lifts) at peak times (largely due to over publicity before these slow lifts have been upgraded imo) your "slowish intermediate" will need to keep moving I suggest. Also beware the final drop into Zug on the itinery run can be very icy, and also a bit daunting at the top, otherwise its fine, some big moguls down there too - but keep moving and be off by 9am from St Anton latest preferably earlier, or you'll get held up. Also advice re getting back over new Flexenbahn avoiding 3pm bun-fight, turn back early or stay late(ish) but not too late obvs.....secret is to stay ahead of the masses who flock to this on a sunny day. Enjoy, its a great run, albeit a bit over-hyped imo and can be tedious for good skiers, plenty better days' skiing to be had in all areas of Arlberg. My advice is pick an area, eg Rendl, Stuben and max it rather than being in the crowds.

I'd recommend an early morning in Rendl if you are there in a busy week. Tends to be a lot quieter first thing and there are some decent options up there. (The red back to town is worth a trip early in the day)

@Northernhills, +1 and best avoided when all the chalet staff are hooning down there about 3.30pm most days! Agreed great options on Rendl. My other favourite is Albona.

Thanks very much all. Lack of local knowledge isn't helping us, and it's very crowded (although lift queues aren't too bad).
We stumbled on stuben today (with just my wife and daughter, both strong skiers) and had a good time - given very low viz. So much quieter than some of the stuff above St Anton.
Think we'll try to get first lift tomorrow and head towards rendl or stuben as per @Markymark29 and @Northernhills

@turbosmurf, worth a day in Warth as well, get an early lift over, also there is more skiing around Zurs then first seems, and you can follow the sun with it having skiing on both sides of the valley...
