Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski gloves with impact protection

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I fractured the fifth metacarpal in my hand back in Nov, and the injury is nearly healed, and should be okay by the time I go skiing at Easter. However, while the injury should be fine (movement in my hand is perfect), I obviously want to avoid falling and injuring it further just as it’s mended itself.

Firstly, I need to avoid falling (the skiing will be mostly cruisey as it’s with the family) but does anyone know of any gloves that offer a little extra protection?

Wasn’t sure whether to put this in the injury or equipment section?!

Best to wear a mitten and tape the 5th to 4th is you are worried about it, but fire 4 months it should be strong.

Try motorcycle gloves (just normal road or specialised offroad)? Or get some uPVC/plastic sheet or strip from a diy store or e bay, or some thick or dense foam or neoprene to your liking (e bay again) and stick/tape/elastic/velcro over or onto glove.

Race gloves from Leki or others have some protection built in. Should do the job.

Thanks guys - some great ideas. The issue is that the vunerable area is the side of the hand on the little finger side (essentially the bone from the little finger but further down in the palm).

The Leki gloves would be perfect - but the protection is mostly on the fingers and back of hand, rather than where I need it.

I might try @Grizzler’s suggestion and see if I can modify my existing gloves to help give the side of the hand a bit more protection.

Invicta race gloves have padding on the side of the hand, I don't think it would prevent a break though.

You might find a pair of mitts easier to mod? even if its just the one mitt.
Maybe expandable foam could be used & molded to fit your hand.

That’s interesting, @rjs, might check those out. I know it won’t prevent a break - I just don’t want a (normally) harmless fall undoing all the good work due a slight weakness in the bone.

Cheers @Mr.Egg, might due that if all else failsz

@Handy Turnip,

Fracture of the fifth metacarpal is usually due the hand punching a hard surface with a clasped fist, it an also occur with a karate chop action onto a hard surface - though this is quite unusual.
Fractures of the fifth metacarpal are therefore quite rare in skiers so i'm not sure it needs protection as you would be unlikely to reproduce the injury. If you wanted some support for the hand and wrist just use wrist guards - they would offer some protection.

Yep @Jonathan Bell, a swinging arm at full speed against a goal post playing in a football match!

It’s actually feeling stronger by the day, and wearing gloves in the cold weather this week has made it feel quite supported so am starting to worry less. Maybe ski gloves are just level of protection I need.

Like you said, I’d be unlikely to reproduce the injury.

 You know it makes sense.

@Jonathan Bell, Happy I managed that plus prox/mid 5 and prox/mid 4 dislocation with a very odd fall, where my inner voice went, “oh, my lower skis released, oh there’s a tree, which I have just hit, merde, I am on a 3 m cliff, why does my hand look funny?”

On a very innocuous side piste I must have skied a 1,000 times Embarassed
