Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

The
world's steepest funicular railway
with a maximum gradient of 110% (47.7°) has opened in Switzerland in the alpine resort of Stoos (which I can't say I've previously heard of).
The barrel shaped carriages are free to rotate so that the passengers stay upright as they ascend the slope.

The initial heave is pretty steep - but maybe the 'tramway' is not classified as a funicular.

, Indeed, I've ridden the St Louis Gateway Arch elevator. Fairly simple concept - you just need to have the compartment free to rotate and the weight of the compartment keeps it horizontal as it climbs up the curving track. Might be a bit uncomfortable if the rotating surfaces should ever get stuck though.....

, I've been up it two or three times. I was once en route from Washington to St Louis sat next to a friendly American. Turned out that he was a bit of an expert on fire safety, and was en route to the Arch to discuss with the operators how they would cope in the event of a fire - which made me stop and think.
As a side comment to anyone thinking of visiting St Louis - it is very worth visiting the museum at the base of the Arch. When I went I had long had the impression that America had been thrown together yesterday. Well, St Louis prides itself on being the 'gateway to the West' and the museum makes clear that, in terms of a European presence, a lot of America really was thrown together not so long ago.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.
