Hi All,
Just joined up after lurking for a few weeks - seems like the busiest, friendliest Ski Forum. And I have a question!
We are planning a few days skiing in the week before Christmas (18th-23rd). We both love skiing in Austria (Schladming and Skiwelt mostly) but for the last four seasons have deserted it for Italy (Sella Ronda). Now we want to go back and St Anton (linked with Zurs/Lech etc) seem ideal to us - because we love 'travelling' (eg exploring the outer reaches of a resort) rather than just bombing up and down.
The only thing that has been worrying me is the reputation for St Anton pistes to be packed - so the question, does anyone here have experiecne of that pre Christmas week? Is it carnage? Or quiet?
It would be good know know what we are letting ourselves in for!
Cheers,
OLI

...and even if the St Anton pistes are busyish, you can now soon be in Zurs (quiet) or even Warth (very deserted)
Good choice of week I would say

@oliclark, Welcome to SH......answer to your question - very quiet. If the snow is good its a great time to ski, stay on grassy slopes though if you are going off piste (e.g.; avoid Rendl high up, lots of sharks). Enjoy

I've skied St Anton the weekend before Xmas a couple of times and thought the pistes were horribly busy, with long queues for key lifts and too many out of control skiers. That said, we ended up in St Anton as the snow was better there than in Lech. (If the St Anton regulars consider that to be a quiet time, I'd hate to see the place when it's busy ).

@sugarmoma666, I suspect it depends whether it’s a week before Christmas which includes Christmas weekend or not?

definitely quiet
But do note that Skiwelt and Arlberg are very different.
To appreciate Arlberg you must like it quite a bit more challenging than the very mellow Skiwelt (or stay in Lech and only ski in Lech-Oberlech-Warth)

Depends on snow conditions in all resorts - higher resorts busy if not much snow in the lower resorts.
If not much snow then the glaciers get very busy!
Planning to go pre Christmas week is a good time - it should be quiet.
Don't book anywhere and see where the snow is!

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Cheers again - our trip won't include the weekend before Christmas - just skiing Monday to Friday so hopefully not too busy.
Regarding the skiing itself - what we like is variation - bit of steep - bit of cruising and a lot of great huts to eat our weight in cheese.

Its a long time since I was there for more than a day, but the only really busy bit is what they call Happy Valley the going home bit.
The week before Christmas should be a bit quieter.
If you travel to the outer reaches of the Alberg region you'll have more than enough space.
I havent been there since they opened up the link to Warth, and
As @Markymark29 says "plenty of tough stuff" in Warth,
There was a bit there we called "the Mother of Moguls", It may look smaller now, but it seemed pretty huge when I had to slither down it on my bottom as I'd broken my Salomon rear entry boot by leaning back too hard.

Up to Friday 22nd December 2017 it should be quiet.
Had a great year once just before Xmas at St Anton, booked last minute. Plenty of accomodation free in the village and great snow with very few skiers on the hill.
