Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Transfers from Salzburg airport?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Putting together a DIY mid-February trip, possibly to Maria Alm, which will mean flying in to Salzburg airport. Can anyone recommend transfer services from the airport to resorts in the Ski Amade area (Maria Alm is apparently something like 1h 20m away)? What sort of money would they be? Given there are 4 of us, it's possible that hiring a car may work out cheaper but I suspect not.

A private VIP taxi from www.holiday-shuttle.at will get you to Maria Alm in just over an hour. Price is €140 each way. For 4 passengers this is a cheaper option than 4 separate tickets on the regular timetabled shuttle.

Other taxi companies are available - see the Salzburg Airport website for a list.

Remember to pre-book - don't just pick a cab off the rank at Salzburg Airport.

Slightly cheaper than Holiday Shuttle:

However between 4 people a rental car makes much more sense, prices start from around €100 for a week. That also gives you the flexibility to visit other Ski Amade areas which are on your lift pass.

That's very useful to know, thanks. At the moment, it's looking like working out a little cheaper to put together flights, transfers and hotel than getting a package with e.g. Crystal would be.

@J2R, try autoeurope.co.uk or the car hire tab on skyscanner to get good prices for a rental car.

Mid-feb is high season, so you might struggle to get a reasonably sized hire car for much less than £200. Add on the fuel and extra insurance for Germany (the route goes via Bad Reichenhal) and it starts to add up.

Thanks. The trouble is that 4 people with suitcases and skis requires a larger car, which seems to work out at €300 or more for the week. Not visited Maria Alm before so not sure whether we'll want to look further afield or whether there's enough there, but obviously having a car would be handy in that case.

@J2R, Maria Alm is a nice, small resort that's great for families. Although it is on the Ski Amade ticket, the other resorts are quite spread out and require a car to reach.

If you want somewhere larger in the same area, the Ski Circus is a better alternative. If you can't find suitable/affordable accommodation in Saalbach or Hinterglemm, look at Leogang or Fieberbrunn. Distance from Salzburg is the same, as is Shuttle price.

Having gone last year and been ferried around by Scarpa, I would definitely look to hire a car to have the flexibility. Much of the parking in resorts is free and it’s great to be able to try different spots each day.

Car hire isn’t cheap but you can estimate what fuel you’re likely to use and it’s probably cheaper than over here. On balance I reckon you’d pay more to hire a car than get a transfer, but you’d be able to experience a lot more of the area. It’s a case of weighing up which is more important, budget or options. I’ve prioritised both at different times.
