Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Gotthart Tunnel derailment closes route.

Bit of a heads up, but a derailment last week in August has closed the Gotthard Tunnel in Switzerland to passenger trains for months and could extend into the winter season.
Goods traffic will continue using the unaffected side from next week but passenger trains will be diverted around the longer and slower Panorama route, and need to change trains.

Was the derailment of a passenger train? What a nightmare that would have been!

@pam w, Nobody injured but 16 freight wagons were derailed, some badly damaged, and damage to 8km of track and over 20,000 sleepers. They are not letting any passenger traffic back through the tunnel out of an abundance of caution though until the repairs are done.
