Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Scotland Snow Reports 2017 / 2018

@Ian_86, well that depends on the weather, snow conditions, when you're going (weekend, holidays, midweek?), what level of skier you are and what type of runs you like.

IMHO in good snow, Glenshee has more cruisey runs (and more runs in total) whereas Nevis has great lift-assisted off piste in the back bowls if you have the right gear / experience. Nevis is more prone to closure due to wind.

Thanks for the reply.

The only way we can make the trip is booking ahead with I know is not ideal but unfortunately we unable to make a last minute trip when a Good forecast comes along.

We are booked for to come up the last week in February.

We are a mix of ability’s from beginners to experienced intermediates. I’ve spend a lot time on well groomed French mountains and have never really ventured off piste properly so this is not a important selling point for us.

I see Glencoe is within 30 minutes of Nevis. From a bit of reading it seems is a good resort. Could it be a good back up if Nevis range is poor due to wind or will it suffer the same?

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?
Yes, Glencoe could work as a backup - it's generally a little less vulnerable to wind closure.

"Well-groomed pistes" isn't really something Scotland specialises in, but you'd probably enjoy Glenshee best if that's your main priority. Nevis Range could be OK too, but you might be disappointed / surprised by Glencoe (a lot of it's more like a natural freeride mountain).

Even if you have to book the week in advance, can you at least wait before booking accommodation? It won't be peak season so places shouldn't get full. And it'd be a shame if you booked accommodation in Fort William for Nevis Range (for example) and then the best conditions turned out to be in the east.

Thanks very much for the advice.
We will leave it as late a possible but unfortunately work commitments mean we will need to book at least 7 days in advance.

It’s a part of the the UK I’ve never been to so we’re looking at it as a weekend away walking and if we get to ski then that would be awesome. Very Happy

I'm an hour from Glencoe, weather is officially minging today in Oban, pretty windy and sleety at sea level, it's 0923 and it's basically dark! I see from twitter Glencoe has declared they're shut today. Forecast for next 7 days is looking unsettled at best. Glenshee looks similar.

don't think I can pull off a sicky tomorrow Sad

60 or 70cm of fresh snow has fallen in the last 72 hours meaning that all runs on the mountain now have a great cover of windblown fresh snow. This should provide some amazing skiing tomorrow from the summit all the way to the car park. All lifts can now run if needed and the weather tomorrow is looking pretty good with light to moderate westerly winds and some light snow showers forecast. Enjoy.

The Lecht really needed it for this weekend's races but has come up short. Gordon Skiers have cancelled the BASS races but are still hoping to run the Bairns.

@Grizzler, thanks, though it's a bit grainy for my liking. Trying to get a moving skier by night is a toss up between blur and camera noise.

@scotspikey, I do use a lid when there are other skiers around, or when I'm between literal rocks and hard places, but it was all soft and fluffy and we didn't even meet any sheep Madeye-Smiley

Here are some clips from yesterday when the ski club ran the nursery slopes by floodlight at Leadhills. The snow there was lovely too Cool

If anyone has info on whether Glenshee are going to open up over the back of Sunnyside towards Glas Maol then shout...! I've asked them directly but they seem reluctant to answer, probably because they don't want to put people off coming up over the weekend, and as a result (if it remains shut) it will likely be mega busy.

Glenshee usually open out gradually, so I doubt the third (Glas Maol) valley will open this weekend. That would involve at least another 4 lifts opening since Sunnyside is the furthest they've got so far.

They might get into the middle valley.

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much
Yeah I didn't expect them to open all the way to Glas Maol just into next valley as there are a few more runs there and it opens things up given how buys they tend to be at weekends. I was in Braemar a couple of weekends ago and locals were saying snow over there was actually better in general but it was thin in places on the way. Anyway, will see what they say tomorrow. I went up a couple of years ago in Jan and got an epic week day with almost everything open and not too busy

I use off-camera flash quite a lot for set pieces, but when I'm in the middle of nowhere, and with windchill of -20, in a hurry coz freezing hands, have no tripod, have deep powder underfoot, there's no way it's gonna happen even if I had a remote flash in my bag Toofy Grin

It's a 'nursery slope' so the skiers and boarders are mostly nervouse, but enthusiastic learners. Furthermore, being that it is a nursery slope, it's not very steep and the pow isn't particularly fast.

It was very busy at Glencoe today, so I went to Nevis range as I had not been there for a while. I had some excellent weather, met some very happy people, skied on some superb snow which varied from well pisted to unpisted powder on top of crust.

Next Friday looks like a must day to ski in Scotland before all the rain comes, and the temperatures rise. I think the flu bug is going to keep on rising this January!

Mucky weather up here today presently, Nevis range closed for the day, Glencoe still to say at 0900 (now 0914) but looks unlikely given strong winds. Tomorrow looks the same with high winds. Thu/Fri looks a bit better if you're keen, less wind but some precipitation likely, no blue sky days in sight at the mo. Good snow is going to go off a bit with warm winds yesterday/today/tomorrow causing thaw/freeze conditions but there should be a decent base now. Webcams look ok for cover but weather is 'smurred in' as they say up here.
If you're travelling far this week looks ropey, maybe one to miss. Sad

Just a heads up, I have had two 4-5 day trips up to Scotland one the week before crimbo & 2nd week in Jan. Both timed to perfection for a few days of bloody awesome bluebird days. Excellent conditions overall & lots of pow. Mixed it up with mostly Glencoe & odd single days at Nevis, Glenshee & the Lecht.

Considering I drive up from Dorset! Check the forecasts, time it right & get lucky. I took my campervan which makes Scotland ski trips easy, being a freelancer also helps Smile

Time off: Check, wax skis stick in campervan, check weather on an hourly basis
Weather Forecast says pow: Check, Get camper van ready on standby
High pressure post pow on cards: Check = Get in camper at 5pm, head north in the eve, overnight borders area, am check where its dumped overnight or dumping now for a PM ski at choice of destination. Or if feeling the urge drive through the night to arrive in a foot of pow at Glencoe car park for the first lift!

Win at Pow & Bluebird ski days, bonus points for driving up Sunday for a midweek slopes to yourself sesh.
Very Happy
