Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

New helmet, whats all this mips about ?

Time for a new helmet and I see the higher end stuff advertise MIPS which is supposed to help absorb impact from a twisting blow if I understand the info correctly.

Anyone have a helmet with MIPS or any info on the effectiveness ? Or any general helmet info / recommendations.

Thanks Dave

I have a bike helmet with MIPS. I have not yet tried banging my head on the road with it. It's just a helmet, doesn't weigh or cost much.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

My POC helmet has MIPS, I bought it for the colour Toofy Grin Toofy Grin Toofy Grin

No idea if it'll work, I guess no one outside of a lab will ever know for sure as you never bang your head the same way twice with 2 different helmets (i.e. to test with a MIPS and none MIPS)

One thing Id say though is the way the MIPS pin in the is and the way the MIPS works in the helmets I have seen is that it'll only help in a front/back impact, not a side on one.

Personally I'm not convinced even though I have one.

I can see the value in cycling helmets where more friction is involved

My Ski and Bike helmets have MIPS, but I haven't tested either of them yet in a crash Very Happy

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I've got a Poc with MIPs, it makes the same noise as other helmets when not sitting down quickly enough on the chairlift or forgetting to duck when getting on the gondola. Hoping not to test its effectiveness beyond that.
I bought it because it was the best fitting one in the shop.

My previous helmet was a sweet trouper not MIPS. Had to adjust it down to fit. New helmet is a MIPS sweet trouper and is perfect fit on the max setting. So MIPS will reduce the internal volume slightly. MIPS is not any worse and therefore even if it didn't work would be the same. If it is better then all the the merrier.

When I was a learner my helmet got banged regularly. Now I'm older and more experienced when I go down I'm more inclined to quickly get on my back and my helmet takes less punishment. However, if I'm going to have a serious bang I want my helmet to be up to the job.

Thanks for replies folks, having read the blurb (thanks for link powderadict). i think I shall go for Comfort and fit as the main considerations , if this happens to be a helmet with Mips then i'll pay a bit more . And colour of course !!
I'm sure all will provide much more protection than the wooly hat I once used to wear ! Very Happy

@scarbski, If it turns out you have a large head, and you try one on and it fits Toofy Grin, I have an Oakley MIPS Helmet for sale in the secondhand section at half price.
