Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

My new cracking Scarpa boots

 Poster: A snowHead

Hello, I'm Bobi
I start here with a problem Neh Neh

I have new touring ski boots, Sparpa Vector.
Can you you tell me your opinion about the "cracking" or "poping" sound you can hear in my video?

http://youtube.com/v/xYpTOHZHC_4

The sound comes out from both boots when they are locked forward.
I didn't use the boots yet.

Thankyou,

@BobiM, Welcome to SnowHeads snowHead

Do you get any sound when the boots are in walk/tour mode?

It sounds like the walk mode lock isn't fully engaging. Have you tried removing the liners to check if you can see anything physically clicking / moving with the sound?

There is no strange sound in walk mode.
I removed the liner but the mechanic parts are hidden, I can not see.
I'm not sure if I should return them or try to surgically open them ....

I would send your video clip to the seller, and ask for their comment. Boots should be pretty much silent, especially when in ski mode.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Thankyou for advice, I was not sure if this sound is normal or not.

The seller answered:

"I contacted the manufacturer.
They said that in fact, there were a few shoes that cracked like that.
They can change the walk-/skimode.
But you can also use the boots for the moment if you need them. There is no security risk."

So, I say, problem solved.

Good to hear you received a quick and satisfactory response.

My guess is that the manufacturing process for some boot sizes resulted in those sizes being slightly over or under sized, which resulted in the sound.

Unless they can provide a quick (and quiet) replacement, try them out and see if the noise disappears as the wear in. If not ask for a replacement.

Doesn't seem to me that the ski mode is locking properly. I had a similar problem with my scarpa maestrales (which are a great boot by the way) when the canting adjustment worked loose. This is by the ankle bone and is tightened with an Allen key or Similar

If it does turn out to be a loose screw than I'd put Loctite or similar on the screw because it's most likely to work itself losse and fall out at the most crucial time of your ski touring season.

Good advice and just what guides on touring trips have told me to do. Does seem to need retightening every so often if you don't go the loctite route it's likely to reoccur-does seem surprising on a new boot though
