While the Northern Hemisphere is starting to get geared up for the season, the season here in NZ is still going strong. Here is last weekend on the North Island:

Looks good. Am over in the North Island at Xmas. Wondering if Ruapehu open for the holiday period? Nice to get a day in prior to three weeks in Feb/March in the Northern Hemisphere Very Happy

I'm afraid that's mid summer down here and there is no skiing on the North Island. The lifts are open though, and if you are in the area, I highly recommend visiting as it's a really interesting and accessible active volcano.

In Australia, we are having a season for the ages. For those lucky enough to be up here, they will talk about it for years.

Kea Ora. Ruapehu was open for skiing between Xmas and New Year in 2004. Did a road trip with visiting relatives from Havelock North from where I could see the glistening glacier year round. Odd wearing sandals in the snow. Did look a little slushy.

Have done the Tongariro crossing which is fab

Back in the 90s, I skied on Ruapehu at Christmas, though that was an unusually late season even back then. Perhaps global warming has made that a thing of the past.

(It got a bit slushy in the afternoon, so we drove down to the coast and had a few hours in the sun on the beach!)

Went to North Island last year in July/August and were gutted that we didn't have a chance to ski. Looks lovely. Was so weird because we drove from Rotorua to Napier. The pass had been closed the week before we went due to too much snow, but within a couple of hours total we were in shorts and t-shirts in Napier. Brilliant country.

@Kea Ora, We are thinking of NZ next summer (July /August) , to drop son at race camp, have a couple of weeks on South Island and return to Canada via Cook Islands or Fiji.

We want to do some hikes whilst we are there: maybe Queen charlotte (maybe mountain biking) and/or Abel Tasman. Have you experience of these in winter?
