Hi Everyone,
i have never been to South America before.
I couldn't travel before September 16th, but would love to get some skiing in. How are the conditions down there mid and end of Sept? Is that too late to book a trip? Is that basically like Colorado or Utah in March 16th??
Valle Nevado vs Portillo, is there any place else i should consider at that time. Somewhere that is having a better winter or is better later? I have pretty much the end half of September free, so open to anywhere really that is open for skiing.
Chile is quite afforadable and i see tons of frequent flyer availability at that time. That is why i focused on those two resorts. American who speaks no Spanish, but i have traveled quite a bit internationally.

Pass both & go direct to Termas de Chillán much more vertical & terrain. They are both to close to Santiago so expensive. Portillo very limited accomaodation

It's dumping in Nevados de Chillan with nearly a metre of fresh show. Just seen some pictures of Las Trancas.

@skisnowbird, then best keep your options open when you arrive, check the forecasts and decide. It would probably be mostly spring skiing, but someplaces can get a last blast of winter.

Mid End of Sept is late Spring Conditions but at Chillan you have good altitude & the longest (piste) run in South America.

The National Day of Chile is on the 18 September, and that normally co-incides with a storm system rolling through Chillan and environs.

just got back from a few day trips to santiago resorts. They are losing snow fast. as others have said, go south if you can, they got a lot of snow last week that should last. I guess storms are always possible, but we were limited to mostly piste last week at valle nevado and la parva.

Also, if u are gonna drive yourself to valle nevado, etc, as day trips. The road up to the resort is insane. Possibly the hardest drive I have ever experienced to get to a resort, and i did it with dry conditions. I would not want to do it more than one time TBH (i used a shuttle service one time, which was fine).

@Redwine, 17 yrs ago i did the drive daily (up in morning down in afternoon )from downtown Satiago (where the action is) in all conditions for a few weeks

I cannot imagine doing that drive every day. I had to explain to my daughter what burning brakes were. The rental car that I had certainly could not withstand my driving that road very day.
