Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski Boot Fit Help for First Purchase

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi,

I have recently decided to bite the bullet and invest in a good pair of ski boots. They seemed to fit very well in the shop but after a week of skiing i developed an issue. I have a problem in that one of my ankles and forefoot is wider than the other due to a previous injury (left). The wider left foot fits perfectly on the runs but I have trouble with some movement of the right foot in the boot on parallel turns. The shop I bought them from provide a guarantee to replace with store credit up to 1 year after purchase, however they want to try and pad the liner first with a butterfly and/or custom insole. I have heard mixed reviews about this method that it is a short term fix rather than a solution and given the costly and recent investment I was hoping for some advice. Am I wasting my time with padding the liner or is this to be expected with asymmetrical feet? Or would I be better trying to go the route of store credit and a smaller pair?

Thanks

@tpadders,

My (uneducated) response would be : You can't make a 'too big' boot smaller ; However, you can make a 'too small' boot bigger..

The experts will be along shortly !!

Welcome to SnowHeads ! Smile

@tpadders, -- wot @albob, said. It's possible to make the shell a bit bigger (grinding away the inside, pushing it out). Adding padding to the inner boot may work for a while, but as the materials are compressable, not forever. So in the ideal world, go to bootfitter - Solutions4Feet for example(he posts here as CEM), but as you have some sunk costs, go back to the shop you got them from and see what they can do.

@tpadders, a "good" fit in the shop, unfortunately, as you have discovered, doesn't necessarily translate into a good fit for skiing.

Store credit and a smaller pair would be my suggestion but maybe from a store staffer who actually knows what they're doing? (This may not be possible).

I don't imagine you can get a refund and go somewhere else?

You do have "special" feet and any solution is bound to be a compromise. But I'd agree with previous posters that you probably need smaller boots. I had ski boots altered by CEM to accommodate my bunions - worked a treat. I'd be inclined to take the store credit and go to Solutions4Feet, if you're anywhere within a few hours drive.

@pam w, ah of course, the store credit doesn't necessarily need to be for ski boots, does it?

@zikomo, what an odd comment...the OP can take the store credit and use it to buy something else leaving him free to buy boots somewhere else
