@Gainz, paid 6800 yen for the most expensive sushi set in a Michelin star Izesushi in Otaru. Paid 550 yen for a perfect simple dinner at one of the onsen resto as well. And many price options in between those two at different places arrount Niseko Moiwa and Otaru

If you chose not to go to Kutchan from Niseko Hirafu, then Otaru won't work for you.
Plenty of choice from Otaru but all include travel, whether by car, bus or train.
Otaru Tenguyama is closest at 15 mins. Teine or Kiroro the longest at 50 mins.
In between time wise, Asari, Sapporo Kokusai.
Visited Hakuba Cortina but didn't ski it, but heard great things about its trees. But it's very much out on a limb so includes a decent 'commute' from Happo-One or Goryu.
I skied Happo-One, Iwatake and Tsugaiake. All great. All different. But we did have excellent conditions.

Those travel times aren't that bad, quite similar to Banff. I'll look into both areas at length over the next week as the boys are well up for another jolly to Japan. If I have any more questions I'll give you a shout. Thanks man!

Mike, how easy is it to get around on public transport (particularly form Otaru)? I'm flying solo and on a bit of a budget, so car hire really not an option.
I didn't make it over last year due to injury and this year I'm just mapping out a plan. It was going to be a two way split, Furano for a week then Niseko for two with day trips to Moiwa/Kirroro and maybe a day or two cat thrown in. I'm part wondering whether to go for a three way split now, Furano, Otaru, Niseko (a week each again with odd day trips), but don't really want to waste too many days on transfer/travel.....

Very doable.
Transport from Otaru is cheap packaged with a day ticket / cheap.
