@PowderAdict, You're precisely correct - that's what it's for - thanks. I need to thread that through the ice-axe loop to make it work as a compression strap.

And just for fun I dug out the images I have of the first airbag I rode with in December 2008, and Eagle Pass heli used these for all their guests.
Mike is American football player sized, so that really is a big pack. They weren't hugely heavy, just bulky and very stiff.

A bit more research for anyone else contemplating an airbag purchase for a small person:

At the Oktobertest ski test one of the reps had some airbags to try on. I tried the Ortovox free rider 22 but that was too big and bulky for me. The ABS Vario in small was a better fit but the rep recommended I try the more compact ABS Powder. They also had another Ortovox 30L model, but that was so big that I didn't bother trying it.
