Insurance shortly after an operation

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hey all,

Bit of a specific question, but I was operated on in March. Everything went well, and I'm trying to get back out to NZ for June to instruct. I don't want to go out without cover for this injury - I don't think I'd be covered under the UK/NZ recipricol healthcare agreement either as it's very obviously a pre-existing injury.

Does anyone have any knowledge of insurers who specialise in people who've recently had operations? Most insurers I've contacted will cover me, but exclude that particular issue until 6 months have passed.

Replies much appreciated!

@jiagedaping, have you tried MPI Insurance Brokers? Good luck with your recovery.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Hi - yes - MPI will insure me excluding my injury.

First question, I suppose, do you have a letter from your physio / surgeon / consultant clearing you to ski? (If it affects skiing, of course.)
Some companies will exclude, some refuse cover, some might take on at extra premium. Depends what the op was for and what its future implications are ( you've not said). I've had full cover after some minor ish internal surgery: but after knee surgery, for instance, I'd expect insurance issues for a couple of years, maybe. Can sometimes depend on exactly how you describe the cause or op and what any follow up letter you have says.
Sorry, that's not stunningly specific. Can only suggest lots of shopping around on medical /pre-existing conditions insurance.
Good luck.

@jiagedaping, it does (or did) exist as my hubby skied 3 months after a neck fracture which required surgery. He was insured and was given the permission to do so by the doctors. It wasn't a specialist insurer, just the company we were insured with at the time.

Ok - great to hear that it might be possible.

Having looked again, I think I'll be ok without though. The NZ/UK agreement appears to cover me if my condition gets worse. So my thinking now is that I can go out, pay any minor maintainence issues that arise, like a couple of physio sessions, and if something major happens then I'll be covered for stabilising treatment under the NZ health service, and can just fly myself home. Not that I'm especially expecting anything adverse, but insurance is for the worst case.

Docs have given me clearance to go ahead, so I guess I'll just get back on the phones on Monday. Was just wondering if there was a specific insurer who specialised in taking on more marginal cases, but sounds like it's pot luck.

Thanks!

@jiagedaping, surprised that MPI's 'Don't Stop me now' policy didn't cover it,as it is specially designed for pre-existing conditions.

I think it's just the timing. Although the docs have said I'm fine, I want insurance in June for an op that happened in March. I'm sure that they'd cover it 6 months down the line or so, but maybe 3 is just too soon.

@jiagedaping, great. I shall certainly look at this when the time comes for me to renew (like many, I'm currently with MPI).
