Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Denver>France/Germany/Swiss cheapest airline for checking skis?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hello,

I’m looking to ski Chamonix in March 2018, flying from Denver Colorado to Munich/Zurich/Paris or another nearby airport with a good price. I’m getting conflicting information on cost of checking skis. I’ll have skis, boots and a large backpack. What airline is my cheapest option?

I’ve read Swiss air offered free bag check but that doesn’t appear to be the case.

British Airways have good deals to Zurich however if I read their site correctly it seems they will charge me for 2 checked bags, 1 for my boots, 1 for skis, and my backpack counts as my 1 free bag allowance.

Any suggestions?

Do you think it would be a hassle to fly into Munich and travel to Chamonix with skis via train?

Thank you for reading this.

Alan

@LakeChutes, The nearest international airport is Geneva.

BA is easy - all your ski kit plus avy bag if you have one in a roller coffin under 23kg. Free and checked. Boots in a standard roll on. Smaller bag for laptop,personals to fit under seat if necessary.

In your case I'd pack the empty backpack into the coffin.

@LakeChutes, I thought Swiss was free. Zurich to Chamonix a pita.

I've done CHX to Basel to meet a friend and hire car for a previously planned weekend in Engelberg. Was doable by rail after a day's skiing. I'd have thought on a Swiss transfer ticket you could get all the way to Chatelard-Frontiere via Martigny from Zurich.

SBB timetable has ZRH flughafen to Martigny under 3.5 hours via Lausanne.

@LakeChutes, as @rjs said you should be looking at Geneva. It's an hour from Chamonix and you pick up a minibus transfer easily in the airport for about €25, that will drop you to the door of your accommodation

Swissair offer free bag (and free ski carriage) if you book economy or business class. The cheapest economy ticket does not allow much more than carry on I think

@Dave of the Marmottes, but it's significantly longer than an hour's transfer from Gva.

Yebbut if the direct flight from DEN is not to GVA not a lot of help is it. All I'm saying is ZRH isn't a disaster. Though if its BA routing through LHR can't see why GVA isn't possible bar some pricing glitch that makes ZRH far more attractive.

LakeChutes,

Welcome to Snowheads!

I endorse Dave of the Marmottes suggestion. With BA you could:-

- check in a (large) ski bag, stuffed with lots of clothes;
- carry on a decent sized bag, containing your ski boots and yet more clothes;
- carry on a second, smaller, bag containing a few more bits and pieces (& more clothes, if required...)

And all at no additional cost! Very Happy Very Happy

@Dave of the Marmottes, pretty sure no directs DEN-GVA (reasonably sure not DEN-ZRH either so a change required somewhere - so GVA arrival almost certainly best idea...)

 You know it makes sense.
You know it makes sense.
It may work out cheaper all round if you choose the cheapest air fare and pay extra for checking the ski bag. You could also fly to Paris and train to GVA if time not limited.
