Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

North America Road Trip: Season of 2017

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I was made redundant at the end of 2016. Instead of looking for another job, I packed my car and drove across the North America continent and skied my way from the Rockies to the Pacific and back to the Rockies.

I reported my skiing of the different regions on a Northeast ski forum. So the reports have a strong North American slant. But perhaps for those interested in some of those resorts, it might be useful. Plus some maybe able to glimpse a fair bit of logistic consideration as well.

The main season-long thread, with links to all the skiing threads for each state (also has some non-ski related stuff/photos):

Each state gets its own thread since I stayed at least 2 days in each (some I stayed much longer):

@abc,

Thanks very much - some great reports there!

You don't mention lift tickets (at least not in the reports I've read so far). We had an Epic season pass last year for Vail resorts, for our 3 week trip, but were horrified by the price of day tickets - up to $175! Shocked

How did you get around that? (assuming you did....)

Post #63 in the main ("season bumming") thread:

"Cost:

- Passes: MCP + Epic Local ~ $1000
"

MCP = Mountain Collective Pass

abc, Thanks for that Smile We generally like to tour/roadtrip and always looking for different ideas.

Was interested in your views on Sun Valley, as having discovered its on the MCP wondering if worth combining with a UT, ID, MT and WY trip. So now you have given us more options. Pics are good too, with the log in given Toofy Grin

@Bones, Sun Valley is probably one of the mountain that has more of a "European" feel. (according to our tour guide, it was started by a wealthy European way back when).

Long, well-bashed wide boulevard, with consistent pitch top to bottom
Relaxed lunch with wine
Clientele generally not in a hurry...

If I found myself back there again, I would also consider getting a lesson or two on carving. It's got the perfect setup for practice carving. And with so many Olympians hailing from Sun Valley, I suspect the locals know a secret or two on how to be in perfect control while going down a piste at high speed!

Never been to Lost Trail, yet. Too many mountains, too little time.

To break up the journey from SLC to Bozeman, there's also Jackson Hole you can stop (both SV and Jackson are not DIRECTLY on the way, but the detour are minor)

Yeah - we've done this before but only to Big Sky. I have a friend who we have stayed with before, who just happens to live in Jackson Toofy Grin Met him over there on a trip a few years ago, and have visited a couple of times since Madeye-Smiley

Well, I'd like to say thanks for your trip report, its given me some ideas, and just to add fuel have just purchased MCP for next season snowHead so that's 2 days, JH, Alta, Snowbird and SV with a bonus day too at one Madeye-Smiley Just need to fill in the gaps now, Big Sky, Bridger Bowl, Lost Trail and some others around SLC. Next stop cheap flights, and an email to said friend in Jackson. Roll on 2018

No I didn't - been enough times don't need to go there again - theres much better skiing than that south facing suntrap Toofy Grin

The food, lodges and washrooms though Madeye-Smiley Similar at SV ? We did consider having the bonus day there, but swiftly moved on Very Happy

Hmmm... Sun Valley is also a suntrap... good food & posh bathroom included. Toofy Grin

Only a longer drive from SLC.

abc, Toofy Grin Will be dropping in at SV on the way back down to SLC, only around 4 hour drive so ok.

When heading to JH, from SLC we usually ski first then hit the road Smile We can usually walk into Sides around 9.30 - 10, just about right really Madeye-Smiley

@Bones, you're a braver man than I.

I prefer to go over the Teton Pass during daylight hours.

Toofy Grin Toofy Grin Don't usually go via Teton Pass to Jackson from SLC, usually go via Alpine and Hoback, along the Snake river. I know its longer mileage wise, time wise it should only take 15 mins or so extra. It doesn't Smile Brits often tend to drive a little faster than their US counterparts Madeye-Smiley and its a better road for night driving.

If we've skied GT before heading back I'll then head direct to Swan Valley as its a no brainer.

@abc, Awesome read, sounds like you had a blast and also interesting to hear of your ski now/work later dilemma.

Been on a similar journey myself (since last summer) and still not quite ready to return fully to my corporate 9-5 android life! So much so, the missus and I have decided to work the summer in the Alps (having worked/played the winter season), get a part time job until January and then head out to Japan for a few months... to see what all the fuss is about!

I too, read with interest of your plan to spend a season in Japan. Wish you a cracking time. Hope you'll share your experience here.

Might do the same a few years time.
