British girl falls through snow bridge into underground torrent

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
A 5 year old British girl, part of an ESF ski group, has fallen through a snow bridge into a torrent today at alpe d'Huez. Probably a victim of the unseasonable warm spring weather and thaw. The girl had escaped the attention of the ski instructor on the piste des grenouilles. Falling into the torrent she was carried under the piste by the current. Piste workers, who were securing the slope, went to her aid, one was lowered into the tunnel on a rope while witnesses dug a tunnel through the piste.

The pair were recovered after 15 minutes suffering from hypothermia.

// I noticed the torrents passing under the pistes on Saturday when I was in the resort with my son and was very wary crossing over.

@davidof, I had not heard of that but strangely enough I was out on my bike in Alpe d'Huez today and stopped for a breather in the parking alongside the rifnell, the long beginners slope with the chalet des enfants at the bottom. The stream running between the parking and the slope is, I think, the same stream and there are numerous "snow bridges" where you can get from the parking to the slope. Some are permanent crossing points with pipes underneath, which is fine, and Isuspect any pure snow bridges have long gone, but the volume and speed of water coming down that would not give you much chance once in it. Sounds like they were very lucky to survive. Terirrible experience for them and their parents.

ah you are right, probably the same stream, those Rif Nel bridges look a bit dodgy but as you say there are probably pipes under them.

Chamonix has just tweeted that the Flegere area is going to stay open for a further week than planned, until Sunday 23rd April. Encouraging sign!
