Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

LCL occasional twinges

 Poster: A snowHead

Hello there.

The Lateral on the outside of my left knee keeps twinging occasionally if I have my weight fully on it, or twist as I stand up/pick up my kids etc.

Any tips for helping avoid this happening? Would a brace help? What kind of exercises should I be doing? Cycling seems OK so far but the stepper machine i have has a slight twist to it and makes it worse. Keen to get it feeling strong enough for next season.

No idea about a brace. How about a private physio assessment ?

I’ve had an LCL strain to the same knee twice – ouch! First time was season ending (though it was the end of the season anyway Wink ) and doctor diagnosed by feel only. Second time laid me up for a week, and I had an MRI – slightly scary seeing the visible thinning in the ligament!

I’ve a neoprene brace that does make a difference (with 4 plastic splints through it) – given to me by a French pharmacist after seeing the doctors write-up from the second incident. It’s not very heavy duty, but does seem to work. I still have occasional instability and twinges – I much prefer not wearing the brace, and won’t if I’ve not had any issues for a while, but if the knee is playing up it does seem to help.

So yep, go see a doctor or physio (probably more useful in the UK) and see what they recommend.

May or may not be relevant, but could it relate to your foot - e.g.arches, collapse, pronation etc - or overall alignment of foot to ankle to knee to hip? Had a few medial twinges myself which were foot- related alignment issues, coming on as I aged, confirmed on physio exam as nothing to do with knee per se.

 Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Cheers all... I reckon physio is the way to go if it doesn't heal up over the next couple of weeks. The twinges seem to be getting fewer and further between at the moment.

@plasmastorm,
The lateral collateral ligament (LCL) is an uncommon source of pain.
Pain in the region of the LCL is very common.
The commonest source of lateral pain is that originating from the kneecap.

However your problem is that you don't have a diagnosis so any treatment is a guess.

You need someone to assess your knee, that might include a scan. A scan alone is not helpful.

Seek out some one to give you a diagnosis.
