Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi all, I've been checking out what else I need to service my skis properly and nearly choked at the cost of a steel wire brush. Is there any reason why I couldn't buy a much cheaper one to clean the bases with, like an automobile brush for example? Would it damage my bases or do the job any worse?
Thanks people.

I thought one needs a steel brush to clean the dirt of the base with before applying nice clean wax. The brass brush is for post wax polishing isn't it? I may have got it totaaly wrong though!

You can use a brass brush to clean the base, and quick pass after waxing to clean out the structure (texture) in the base. You can polish with a horsehair/nylon brush, but it isn't really necessary for recreational skiing.
Take a look at the Jon's tutorials http://www.thepisteoffice.com/index.php/tuning-guide/9-base-tuning.html
(or even better book on his excellent half day tuning course)

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@gixxerniknik, I'm no expert but I'm sure one will be along soon.
to clean the base there's two options:
1) Chemical base cleaner, spray on wait, rub off. Some people say it 'dries out' the base, some don't. I did it to my board and it didn't seem to harm it.
2) Put on hot wax and scrape whilst still warm, but set. The new warm wax will loosen and lift the old. (I think this is the most approved of and common method)
Then rewax, allow to cool right down and scrape. I have a really hard nylon nail brush type thing which i use then a rub down with a scotch pad.

I don't clean my bases but I concur with rogg what I understand to be the methods to do so. I have one brush for polishing only.

Just read thepisteoffice guide and great, so I don't need to spend out on more brushes. Guess what I'm doing this weekend then!
