Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Sella ronda/alta badia mountain restaurant recommendations

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Apart from looking at Trip advisor rankings, which mountain restaurants can you recommend for reasonably priced lunches/good value for money for a family of 4. We are staying in La Villa but will also be skiing all day around the Sella Ronda and branching off to the various resorts.

How are the restaurants on veggie options?

Thanks

You're a bit spoilt for choice to be honest, the whole area is a gastronomic tour-de-force for every budget!

Near where you're staying, Utia Pic Pre on the left half way down the red into San Cassiano is a lovely little sun-trap in the trees and good, basic food and very good value, Rifugio Bamby also good value. At the top end you've also got Club Moritzino at Piz La Villa where the food is amazing, but so are the prices (although still good value given the very top-end food!) A little further afield, Rifigio Col Pradat above Colfosco (top of 2nd bubble (Col Pradat) going off to the right) has gorgeous views and decent food (there's a cheap'n'cheerful buffet which is certainly OK and also a la carte option which is a bit more). Diametrically opposite you on the Sella Ronda is Rifugio Friedrich August above Canazei (on the Selva side) - great food, good value and well worth a visit but a bit of a mission to get to and from from La Villa - very doable if you're all decent intermediate skiers though.

Those are particular favourites or ones that've stuck in the memory but there's so many options though and wherever we've stopped, we've never had a bad meal - but we tend to avoid stopping at the larger, canteen-style places you find at the obvious busy points (like the bottom lift stations and resort centres etc) but I've no experience to say that they're not very good as well! (they might be more likely to offer more kid-friendly food like pizzas etc though)

Veggies generally well catered for I think - especially in the more traditional places strangely enough where pasta, dumplings and spaetzle style dishes are the norm (as well as schnitzels, ribs etc for the carnivores!) although, as it's not a consideration for us, I don't know if the various sauces are meat-based or not, they may well be made with meat stocks etc... just ask, service is nearly always very friendly.

Oh wow, thank you so much! We are real foodies but have to reign ourselves in otherwise we'd spend a fortune on lunch! Definitely more happy with smaller, traditional venues, less canteen type as you say!

Will check them out.

I'm salivating at the thought!

Bamby on the red? I think into la villa is always good, been going there for over 10 years. Rif scotoni on the Hidden Valley.

Actually how far in advance do you think I need to book Scotonis? Could I book a few days in advance when I'm in resort and I know what day I'll be doing the hidden valley?

Don't think you can book. Get there early or be prepared to wait, especially if you want the famous (and huge!) mixed grill.

Rif Bioch (or Biok) in the Pralongia plateau is also meant to be good.
The trip to Santa Croce is a good one - both for food and the view/chapel at the top, easy from La Villa. Either eat at the rif at the very top (La Crusc - traditional) or the ones on the way down that slope are meant to be good too (but I have not eaten there).

The Rifugio at the very bottom of Cir (marked black but really a red, running down from Passo Gardena towards Selva) is good and has nice wooden carvings inside. But maybe not for veggies.

One just off the piste back down to Colfosco from Passo Gardena (Mesoles) is also rated (but also I have not been there).
Some people like the one at the top of the chair up past Colfosco - stube in the basement of a hotel - but I found it rather busy and crowded.
Jimmy's Hutte is a classic especially on a nice day, the view from the terrace ....

Scotoni's - not sure about veggies given the main attraction is mixed grill ...

The trouble is there are many more places to eat than days in the week!

Da Tomasa at the bottom of Piz Sella lift in Plan De Gralba is a good stop for Pizza.
The Viagra pizza even comes with a little blue smartie.

I also had a great steak in Bellavista in Selva Val Gardena.

If i'm being perfectly honest most mountain huts are pretty darn good.

Has anyone been to Pre Da Costa in/around Armenterola? It is not near a piste as far as I can tell but I am looking to go there for an evening meal when we are in San Cassiano.

Santa Croce is always very popular.
If it's full, which is very likely, then there's one on the right almost all the way back down that (superb) blue run. Forget the name, but the food was very good (think that was a Hurtle recommendation?), and of course, not busy, because everyone is crammed in the one at the top.

Then of course there's the cake place in Ortisei. Never dined there, only cake.

As a veggie, my best meals have been Eidelweiss, Colfosco (the 'posh' restaurant bit, as opposed to the bar, where the black truffle ravioli was scrum - so scrum my carnivore OH had it the second time we went - about 12 euros, which given the standard and innovation we considered good value); the Rifugio at Plan Boe above Arabba (really nice spag alio olio peperoncino) and the best pizza I had (with plenty of veggie choices) was in a restaurant - sorry , name escapes me - towards the end of red run 2 into Ortisei, as it flattens out it's on the right.
However, as noted above hard to fault most places on the SR. Yum Smile

Every Hutte in the area will meet your criteria.
We tend to eat off of the SR as this usually gives a smaller more cozy experience.

The absolute diamond for us is Coruna Hutte on the Ortisei side of Seceda. Utter paradise when the sun is out with views to Switzerland, small but perfect.
For the ultimate gastro experience (and 1mEuro loos. Very Happy ), go for Refugio Emilio Comici's off of Piz Sella, Selva.

+1 - this is a genuine problem (entirely of the 1st world variety, I know but a problem nonetheless!)
